🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP 🚨
ICE is trying to deport 100+ African immigrants TONIGHT.
Sharing these injustices is not enough.
🧵👇🏾
After using torture to force many of them to sign their own deportation orders, ICE is using fake documents to conduct a mass deportation of Black immigrants in the next 24 hours.
In case you didn't know: The violent conflict that erupted in the northwest & southwest regions of Cameroon in 2016 has killed thousands and displaced more than 679,000 so far.
Returning these folks in mass is a death sentence. Many will be killed by their own gov't upon return.
And remember the forced sterilizations in the news a few weeks back?
ICE is trying to deport some of the SAME women who suffered through them in an effort to silence them.
The hundreds of Cameroonians and some Congolese immigrants who have spoken out about abuse & mistreatment in detention centers in Mississippi & Louisiana were transferred to TX and are now in imminent danger of being deported.
This all appears to be in retaliation for ongoing hunger strikes by Cameroonian detainees protesting racism, the sterilization of women and the medical neglect happening in detention centers across the country.
Over the last year, dozens of Black immigrants have reported being subjected to retaliatory solitary confinement, as well as violent repression at the hands of ICE agents & guards through pepper spray, rubber bullets, and force.
These are not just statistics. They are lives.
Beatings, breaking of fingers, pepper spraying at the eyes, and choking are among the egregious acts of violence detailed by Cameroonian men detained at Adams County Correctional Facility in an 11 page civil rights complaint submitted October 7, 2020.
Testimony gathered from Cameroonians currently detained reveals that many are being subjected to this violent repression (aka torture) with the intent of intimidating them into signing documents for voluntary departure.
They are quite literally fighting for their lives.
ICE may not give us the time of day but immediate Congressional intervention CAN stop these unjust deportations from happening.
We are extremely concerned about President Trump's nominee. Amy Coney Barrett is not good news for immigrants. She is publicly supported by the Center for Immigration Studies, a Southern Poverty Law Center designated anti-immigrant hate group.
Judge Barrett was the only member of a 3 judge panel who voted to uphold the harmful “public charge rule” that prohibits many immigrants from accessing the benefits for which they are income eligible — even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This nomination sends a clear message that our government doesn’t care. It is up to us to continue RBG’s fight and protect her legacy and the future of this country.
URGENT: More family separation happening at the border. This time our client, a vulnerable 15 yr old girl how came to the US as an infant, was taken by @CBP after arresting her aunt at a hospital. She was taken after surgery & tested positive for COVID-19. cbsnews.com/news/15-year-o…
The minor was taken to Edinburg hospital because of pain caused by a gallbladder stone. She was accompanied by her aunt. Someone notified CBP about them. They showed up at the hospital and took her aunt. The minor was then left alone.
Shortly after, she was transported in an ambulance to the San Antonio hospital with agents following them while the parents were not present. The hospital called the parents to say she was going to be transferred to San Antonio to have surgery.
🚨 #DontLookAway: A 3rd ICE detainee at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia has died from #COVID19
This (preventable) death comes only a week after a whistleblower reported inadequate protections for the virus at another GA immigrant detention center. ajc.com/news/third-ice…
If you missed the news here's a recap:
Dawn Wooten, a former nurse at ICE’s Irwin County Detention Center (also in GA), revealed that ICE:
➡️ Performed hysterectomies on women against their will
➡️ Refused to test people in detention for #COVID19
➡️ Shredded medical records
While these events have both taken place in Georgia (be that at 2 different detention centers), do NOT think for one minute that this isn't going on elsewhere across the country.
We've seen medical neglect of ICE detainees in GA, TX, CA, FL...the list goes on.
Rest in power Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She fought for justice until the very last day of her life. We honor her legacy and are forever grateful for her service to this nation.
It's up to us to continue that fight.
That means ensuring that we do everything in our power to stop the administration from rushing a nominee through the Senate before November. Every Democrat must hold the line. Every Republican must do what is best for this nation. All of us need to act. The stakes are too high.
With the passing of #RGB there are now only four justices remaining on the court who supported DACA in this summer’s decision. If another justice is installed before the election, they will almost certainly join those who would end DACA protections for over 700,000 people.
There's a lot of talk around the forced hysterectomies at Irwin County ICE Detention Center.
This is what we know:
➡️ There are 13 confirmed cases (# may grow)
➡️ We need to #ShutDownIrwin AND #EndDetention
➡️ To get to the root of the problem = #AbolishICE
But there's more 👇🏾
This isn't a one-time thing. The conditions for something like this to occur have been brewing in ICE detention centers for years.
Migrant workers subsidize the U.S. and global economy. That's not up for debate.
So lets celebrate #LaborDay by recognizing this and by honoring the sacrifices our community makes in order to survive in the country they call home.
Major U.S. industries depend on & THRIVE on immigrant labor.
Anyone involved in U.S. agriculture, textile, or construction knows this. The U.S. - both its people and institutions - must acknowledge the realities in these industries & respect the humanity of all workers.
If a country benefits from immigrant labor, that country has a moral obligation to recognize and co-exist with migrants as human beings, with full equality and civic participation.
