Thread:#Biden NY Post is a Kremlin "deza": disinformation. This tactic has a long history. During the Cold War, the KGB HQs worldwide injected "deza" into the public information space via Western mass media, often obscure newrepublic.com/article/142344…
For instance, in 1964, a conspiracy theory about JFK assassinations was fabricated by Newsweek correspondent with the KGB help. In 1983, a small Indian newspaper started a rumor that the U.S. government manufactured the AIDS virus. cia.gov/library/center…
3. These days, newspapers, tabloids and social media are all weaponized and used to inject the message into the public space. A false accusation is produced, visceral images (visual/verbal) are used, often with graphic sexual content, as in the case with Hunter Biden's laptop.
4. The accusation is circulated on social media. Kremlin-funded bots and trolls push hashtags/topic. See the hashtag trending now.
5. Mainstream media reports the story as journalists feel the pressure to reflect breaking events for ratings. It is echoed by many outlets.
6. A public discussion ensues. Experts, prominent public figures, laymen join in with opinions, repeating the story until it becomes common knowledge.
7. After a certain number of repetitions, the negative emotional response is formed. The individuals or groups, targeted by the propagandist, are compromised.
8. Even if/when the fake is debunked, the negative associations stay. It is an irrational reaction. The goal is not to prove that accusation is true. The goal is to create a subconscious association. This tactic is called "rotten herring."
9. I have been writing and talking about these tactics since 2015. Here are some basics:
11. We are at war (called "gray zone" war, a "mind war", a "hybrid war" etc) and we are losing it because we don't acknowledge the aggression. Journalists, debunk the strategies and tactics, not false accusations. Otherwise, you are helping the aggressor.

#ElectionInterference is one of the topics for #debates. Experts focus on leaks, hacks and bots as seen in 2016, but the main threat is overlooked. Russia doesn't just meddle into elections and referendum around the world,” wrote Putin’s aide Surkov. It meddles with their brains.
"Russia meddles with their brains, and they don’t know what to do with this altered state of mind.” The Kremlin is waging information warfare: corroding the idea of democracy and planting new pro-Kremlin thinking. The battlefield is the brain.
The goal is sowing discord and confusion in order to demoralize the West. Words are a military arsenal. Language is a weapon of mass destruction of ideas. This is the war of narratives. Trump's and Kremlin's narrative: Democracy is dead and elections are rigged.
