The iconic Central Bookstore holds its grand opening in Taichung today, marking the return of a literary landmark that witnessed the beginning of #Taiwan’s local literary movement in 1927.
This was the literary hub founded by the “#Taiwan Cultural Association” during the Japanese Colonial era, playing a key role in preserving the local Taiwanese identity through publishing and cultural exchanges at a time of colonialism.
Some of its founders include local literary and democratic movement giant like 林獻堂, serving as the biggest Mandarin book publisher in Taiwan during the colonial era.
When the nationalist government fled to #Taiwan, the government took over Central Bookstore, making it one of the few places that remain in operation after the transition to the nationalist government.
However, during the 1990s, Central Bookstore experienced difficulty to maintain operation so it eventually terminated the business and sold the space to a range of wedding dress or retail businesses.
In 2015, a private foundation rented the old location of the Central Bookstore and gave it a total makeover, breathing life into this historic location and hoping to reinvigorate its position as a hub for local cultural and literary movement.
