Around three decades ago I learned that in English we should say "common sense" for what in Portuguese we call "good sense". And that fact tells something about how each culture see their general population knowledge.
There is a phrase in Portuguese that is the exact translation of "common sense" (senso comum), but it means an uneducated opinion, a poor understanding of the subject. The phrase has a taste of disdain and is employed to disqualify someone's opinion as simplistic, superficial.
In Portuguese we assume common people are superstitious, dumb and prone to misunderstanding everything. Hence "senso comum" (common sense) is not a good thing.
In English, the language implies common people have basic prudence and practical knowledge, therefore a sense that is common is a good one. I mean, what in English is said as common sense, in Portuguese we say "bom senso", literally meaning "good sense".
The Portuguese "good sense" is not a big deal by itself, it is only another way of saying it. Greek likes to say "good" too, as "eudaimonia", "euphoria", etc.
