Exposure to lead affects health, especially children's health. There is no safe level of exposure to it. The manufacture & sale of lead paint is still permitted in >60% of countries
This is what lead poisons in your body:
🔸 central nervous system & brain
🔸 reproductive system
🔸 kidneys
🔸 cardiovascular system
🔸 blood
🔸 immune system
Young children are most vulnerable.
Lead paint is a major source of lead exposure for kids 🧒👧🏻
Lead is added to some paints for colour, to speed up drying & to prevent corrosion. As lead paint ages, it flakes & crumbles, creating lead-contaminated dust and soil.
Lead exposure is especially dangerous to children’s 🧠development and can result in:
🔸 reduced intelligence quotient (IQ) and attention span
🔸 impaired learning ability
🔸 increased risk of behavioural problems
"Last week saw the highest number of #COVID19 cases reported so far.
Many countries in the northern hemisphere are seeing a concerning rise in cases & hospitalisations.
And ICUs are filling up to capacity in some places, particularly in Europe & North America."-@DrTedros
"Over the weekend, a number of leaders critically evaluated their #COVID19 situation and took action to limit the spread of the virus."-@DrTedros
"When I had the honour of addressing the #WHS2019 a year ago, I spoke about the deficit in political will to act on global health & preparedness.
Understandably, both seemed like abstract concepts at the time, involving far away events that happened to far away people"-@DrTedros
#NewZealand 🇳🇿 followed WHO guidance on isolating cases, reducing contact and testing, and successfully eliminated community transmission of #COVID19.
The backbone of #Thailand 🇹🇭 response to #COVID19?
Back to basics: A strong public health response led by identifying, isolating, treating cases and tracing & quarantining contacts of confirmed cases.
#Italy 🇮🇹 was the first Western country to be heavily affected by #COVID19. The government & community, across all levels, reacted strongly & turned around the trajectory of the epidemic with a series of science-based measures.
The polio program’s benefits don’t stop at delivering polio vaccine 💉. From #malaria to #Ebola and now #COVID19, the polio program’s resources and expertise have played a critical role in fighting other diseases. #EndPolio
🆕 clinical trial shows that dexamethasone can boost survival of premature babies when given to pregnant women at risk of preterm birth in low-resource settings
Dexamethasone is a cheap and widely available glucocorticoid used to treat many conditions, incl. rheumatic problems & severe allergies. It has also been shown to be effective in treating severe and critical #COVID19.
Results of the trial have shown that, when administered to mothers at risk of preterm birth, dexamethasone accelerates fetal lung development, making it less likely for preterm babies to have respiratory problems at birth.
"We are at a critical juncture in the #COVID19 pandemic, particularly in the northern hemisphere.
The next few months are going to be very tough and some countries are on a dangerous track"-@DrTedros
"Too many countries are seeing an exponential increase in #COVID19 cases and that is now leading to hospitals and intensive care units running close or above capacity and we’re still only in October"-@DrTedros
