Today, the Government of Ontario became the first province in Canada to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (@TheIHRA ) working definition of antisemitism, as endorsed by consensus at the 2016 IHRA plenary.
The IHRA definition is the product of decades of research, study and deliberation by many of the world’s foremost experts and was accordingly adopted by consensus by the governments of more than 30 countries.
The IHRA definition is strongly supported by the Jewish community in Ontario, its institutions and organizations. CIJA, @bnaibrithcanada ,@CanadianFSWC , and @JSpaceCanada applauded the announcement:
“The IHRA definition provides a framework that can help guide Ontario government institutions interested in understanding contemporary forms of antisemitism, such as Holocaust denial." -- @ShimonFogel
“Ontario will now be equipped to identify and react to incidents of antisemitism in a clear and precise way, and be better positioned to prevent antisemitism and react to it whenever it rears its head anywhere in the province. " - @MichaelMostyn
“By making clear what antisemitism is and looks like, the IHRA definition will allow civil society and government to work together more effectively in our shared goal of eliminating hatred in our province.” - @LevittMichael
"The IHRA definition of antisemitism has been given broad acceptance by Jewish communities around the world. Ontario is following the anti-oppression norm that victimized groups can best define the terms that describe discrimination against them" - @KarenMock
Canada adopted IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism on June 25, 2019, as part of its anti-racism strategy.
More than 40% of all hate crimes in Canada take place in Ontario, making it Canada’s hate crime capital. Four out of the five metropolitan areas with the highest hate crime rates (adjusted for population) are in Ontario.
1/4 CIJA and @CanadianFSWC are working together to fight #antisemitism, and through CIJA have engaged @PrivyCouncilCA after @Israellycoolweek reported that a senior analyst at PCO appears to have published extreme and egregious #antisemitic posts on social media. #cdnpoli
2/4 A Facebook page purporting to belong to a member of the public service employed @PrivyCouncilCA includes dozens of hateful messages, including accusations of Jews collaborating with Hitler and being “Khazar converts” with a “false history.”
3/4 After alerting our senior contacts within @PrivyCouncilCA, we have received assurances that they are taking the allegations seriously and we were gratified to learn that an investigation is already underway.
