WOW. @HuffPost @highline has published one of the best features on the disappearance of data in the Trump administration & its impact: highline.huffingtonpost.com/article/disapp… Bravo. Deep, detailed breakdown of the tragic degradation of one of the USA’s precious public resources: self-knowledge.
March 2017: “The ways that the Trump administration could mess with government data remains the same: budget cuts that could reduce quality, frequency of release or even collection, & alteration or miscommunication of research or statistical information.”
sunlightfoundation.com/2017/03/10/the…
2020: “The erosion of data across the federal government is particularly insidious because it’s relatively invisible to the public at large. Often, the only people who know the value of these sets of numbers are those who work with them daily.”

I’ve talked with so many.
Tragic.
There is a “deep state”, as @marcambinder amazon.com/Deep-State-Gov… @danapriest & @warkin documented: fas.org/blogs/secrecy/…
It’s what Ike warned us of, in parting.
But many agencies collect & create data & use it to govern, heal, discover, build, & inform:
servicetoamericamedals.org
I’ve been writing about the potential of data for public good & for public harms for a while now: radar.oreilly.com/2012/02/data-p…
The last 4 years in Washington have been hard for anyone who cares about public access to information — & it wasn’t easy before! — but 2020 has been the worst
In 2020, the state of #opengov data remains divided, at risk, & underfunded: e-pluribusunum.org/2019/02/11/the…
This @WhiteHouse supports selling data but is hostile to disclosures that show corruption, hold companies accountable, inform the public how power is wielded, & how ads are funded
When open data show reveal incompetence, embarrassment, fraud, waste, or corruption – the Trump regime has tried to remove it. That is why I co-founded @SunWebIntegrity after watch-dogging government data removals from the Internet in 2017, & remain angry Mike Klein shut it down.
In 2017, I had the honor of addressing the annual @ESIPFed conference.
I saw what was already happening to data, & what was to come.
So I thanked the civil servants there for their work gathering data for the People, & making data available to the People.

I'm watching the @SenateCommerce hearing on #Section230 with @Twitter, @Google, & @Facebook CEOs now: commerce.senate.gov/2020/10/does-s… @SenatorWicker now. @jack @finkd @sundarpichai to follow.

Reminder: public officials blocking people violates the 1st Amendment: e-pluribusunum.org/2018/05/23/fed…
Claim by @jack: #Section230 is the most important law protecting speech online.
True: radar.oreilly.com/2011/11/sopa-p…
The First Amendment only protects Americans from government censorship. Image
What I'm watching: whether any CEO or Senator acknowledges
1) asymmetry of media ecosystems &
2) how that affects @Policy violations & enforcement:
3) Conservatives are "working the refs" in media & tech to get false equivalence nytimes.com/2020/08/09/bus…

As this letter outlines, the path @DCPSChancellor has chosen for reopening @dcpublicschools is deeply flawed, both in process & outcomes. @MayorBowser & @CouncilOfDC members, please read this.
Scrap the custodial CARES model. Work with our principals to build something better.
A century ago, @nychealthy ordered windows to remain open for ventilation, even in cold weather, to combat TB & flu. So engineers designed steam radiators to keep them warm in that condition:
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
How many @dcpublicschools have radiators, @DCPSChancellor?
Dear @mayorbowser:
How did @colbycollege open safely? Universal masks, outdoor classes, & bi-weekly testing.
Testing symptomatic folks won’t be enough: Test students & staff before opening, & weekly.
Ventilate, test air, open data.
Don’t gag principals.

Past presidents allowed the @SecretService to stay at their properties for free. As POTUS, @realDonaldTrump has chosen to visit @Trump properties 280 times, & to charge taxpayers high rates for rooms & official events washingtonpost.com/politics/ballr…
This @WhiteHouse won’t say how much.
5 questions journalists need to answer covering Trump:
Can what appears to have happened be confirmed?
If so, was it unprecedented?
Is this recent act of governance normal by the usual standards?
Is what happened a threat to transparency — or democracy? politico.com/magazine/story…
1) Can what appears to have happened be confirmed?

Absolutely: @realDonaldTrump has visited @Trump businesses 503 times. He has spent a third of his presidency there. 303 visits to @TrumpGolf.

Other nations suppressed COVID19 with masks, testing, contact tracing, & supported isolation.

When @markmeadows told @JakeTapper “we are not going to control the pandemic,” it means this @whitehouse is CHOOSING not to try.

So more Americans will die.
cnn.com/2020/10/25/pol…
Would @markmeadows say “we are not going to control a war” & let soldiers die?

We aren’t going to control flooding, & let families drown?

Not to respond to a blizzard or fire, & let Americans freeze or burn?

Unacceptable dereliction of duty not to do what we can to save lives.
It’s mourning in America: 224,819 dead. Coronavirus is spreading rapidly. ICUs filling up.
Governors need to act now to #flattenthecurve: covidactnow.org
If we don’t, hospitals will be overwhelmed, & more people will die.
Mandate masks. They work: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…

1) @Twitter & @Facebook don’t have to host speech that misinforms Americans about the risk of a deadly virus: washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/… They could mask it with facts first.
2) Americans need & deserve so much better from a @POTUS:
Twitter has now masked Trump’s tweet & explained why (it violated rules about spreading misleading & potentially harmful information related to #COVID19”) but also *removed* a tweet.

No linked tweets by @TwitterSafety or @TwitterComms explaining why a tweet by @potus is gone?!
Reading @MikeIsaac’s reporting on @Facebook removing a post for violating its #COVID19 misinformation policy: nytimes.com/live/2020/10/0… but nothing about @TwitterSafety taking down a tweet or what Rules it violated
But @Twitter said it wouldn’t remove his tweets. What changed here?

Alternate POTUS:
Tens of thousands of Americans die from the flu every year. Please get your shot:
flu.gov
One day, we will have a vaccine for #COVID19, but not yet: please wear a mask & follow @cdcgov guidance to protect the vulnerable. Every life is precious.
#COVID19 is the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA, behind heart disease & cancer usafacts.org/articles/top-c…
The @CDCDirector says if we all wear a mask, it will save lives.
If we don’t, COVID19 could be the leading cause of death in America by Christmas.
Be a patriot: mask up!
Most young people may live, but some won’t. Others have long-term effects: theatlantic.com/health/archive… The older & sicker Americans are, the more likely COVID19 will take them. We must protect vulnerable.
Masks are the key way to prevent this deadly airborne disease from spreading.
