BREAKING: Ontario is launching a new colour-coded system for #COVID19 restrictions: green, yellow, orange, red ... and lockdown. cbc.ca/news/canada/to… #COVIDOntario ImageImageImageImage
When the system takes effect, most public health units are set to be in green or yellow, facing largely the same prevention measures as they've been under since June. #covidontario Image
Toronto, Peel, York, Ottawa & the Eastern Ontario Health Unit would be in orange, with LESS stringent restrictions than currently in place for "modified stage 2". Indoor drinking & dining permitted in bars & restaurants, but last call is moved up to 9pm, max 4 per table. #COVID19 Image
Regions would not move from the orange ("protect") level to the red ("control") zone unless their case numbers shoot higher (above 100 new cases/wk/population of 100k) and test positivity rates exceed 10%. #covid19ontario Image
Correction: orange = "restrict"
(yellow is "protect") ImageImage
I am puzzled why Dr Williams and Premier Ford seem reluctant to use the colours to describe COVID levels instead of the more complicated "Prevent" "Protect" "Restrict" "Control" terms.
Do you hear people saying "Hey Ottawa is in the 'restrict' phase?"
No, they'll say "orange" Image
Peel, York, Ottawa and Eastern Ontario health units are to move into the orange phase on Saturday. This means the ban on indoor drinking & dining at bars & restaurants ends. Toronto is not due to move there until the following Saturday, Nov. 14. #COVID19ontario
Ontario's enhanced #COVID19 data dashboard is now live here: covid-19.ontario.ca/data I reported that it would be launched today in this story: cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

you could summarize it as "uh-oh" Image
"Thresholds may be too loose & allow for reopening with +++ community spread." says @BogochIsaac #covidontario
"This is not the right time to reduce public health measures in hard-hit regions: We can neither test adequately nor do contact tracing" says @ASPphysician #covid19ontario

NEW: The @OntarioNDP has obtained a video message that Premier Doug Ford sent to Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College, for his 60th birthday party last year. #onpoli
@OntarioNDP (Background: The Ford govt has tabled a bill to transform McVety's college into a university and allow it to grant bachelor of science and arts degrees, even though the independent board that oversees such proposals has not completed its review.) #cdnpse

THREAD: How Ontario all but ceased conducting comprehensive inspections of long-term care homes. @CBCNews revealed today that only 9 of 626 homes received a full "resident quality inspection" (RQI) last year. #COVID19 cbc.ca/news/canada/se…
In June 2013, the government committed to annual comprehensive inspections of all long-term care homes in the province. These typically took 3-4 inspectors about 8 days, including interviews with staff & residents and a focus on infection prevention.

The auditor general questioned the efficiency of these comprehensive annual inspections in her 2015 annual report, calling for a "cost-benefit analysis to determine the
frequency in which comprehensive inspections should take place in the future." auditor.on.ca/en/reports_en/…

THREAD: Let’s break down the claim by the Ford government that it is devoting $17B in new money on the response to #COVID19 ... because that isn’t actually true.
The bulk of the $17B is $10B in deferrals of business taxes and @WSIB premiums. It’s not “spending” and it’s also not revenue the province will forego forever. In fact, Finance Ministry officials confirmed the province still expects to collect that revenue later this fiscal year
Govt claims $1.5B in “new spending” on electricity cost relief. It’s not actually new, as total hydro subsidy is $5.6B, roughly what was spent in 2019-20. It’s only “new” compared to what was *budgeted* for 2019-20. And ... it’s not because of #COVID19

Premier Doug Ford says putting billboards on Ontario’s 400 series highways could generate “a couple hundred million” in revenue for the province. #onpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/ki…
I got wondering where @fordnation came up with this figure that billboards along Ontario highways could generate “a couple hundred million” in revenue for the province. So I did some research, and some math.

BREAKING: Integrity Commissioner rules Premier Doug Ford did not violate the province's ethics laws in naming Ron Taverner to be OPP commissioner. #onpoli
The full report from the integrity commissioner is available online here: oico.on.ca/docs/default-s…
The report on the Ron Taverner selection does not fully exonerate the government. The integrity commissioner finds "troubling aspects to the (hiring) process that may have led, perhaps unintentionally, to a preference being given to one candidate."
