NEW: "These are our darkest days as a nation. These are our darkest days as a state," @GovofCO begins his #COVID19Colorado briefing. 1,159 Coloradans with the virus are in the hospital, a new high. #9NEWS
Polis says about 95% of those hospitalized survive. "That is not the kind of Russian roulette that any Coloradan wants to play. A 1 in 20 chance of not making it," Polis said. 2,234 Coloradans have died of COVID-19, the Governor says, including someone he called "a dear friend."
Polis says 1 in 110 Coloradans is estimated to be contagious. Notes that a Thanksgiving gathering of 10 means a 1 in 11 change of having someone contagious with the virus at dinner. The Gov is encouraging people to self-quarantine beginning today ahead of holiday events.
.@GovofCO Polis is not telling anyone they "can't celebrate Thanksgiving" in case that was a Q you had.
Polis is moving Colorado's emergency ops center back to its highest level, suggests COVID briefings may return there. During the spring peak, there was actually an outbreak of the virus at the EOC.
Polis says the worst-case scenario remains that Colorado's hospital capacity is exceeded. Will look for clarifications if this is a "do nothing" scenario, which isn't on the table, or if state modeling shows capacity exceeded at current estimated levels of distancing.
Not much new information from Polis so far, but he's been known to bury important new details deep into these briefings, like the baby in the King Cake. So I'll keep listening.
Polis says state is ordering hospitals to report the number of ICU beds they could create if needed - along with staffing numbers. We'll ask if those numbers will be released publicly.
I'm quite certain the Gov just said hospital need to scale back elective procedures in preparation for a surge of COVID patients, but the wording was wonky and I'm not the best listener. Will clarify.
EOC dropping in to say I was wrong to characterize spring situation as outbreak there, says it was a single positive case inside the EOC. I stand corrected.
"We continue urging Coloradans the best way to keep safe is to only interact within your own household," Polis said. Reiterates that "inter-generational" Thanksgiving gatherings should have people starting quarantine today.
Every time the Governor refers to 'intimate contact' at Thanksgiving, I wonder if my family's Thanksgivings are less exciting than others.
NEW: @GovofCO Polis refers to multi-household Thanksgiving gatherings as "bringing a loaded pistol for Grandma's head." Holy s---.
"We've got to buckle down," Polis said. "The virus is more serious now than it's ever been." (The spread is certainly wider but the survival rate has never been better.)
Reporter for the Anschutz media empire declares she has a three-part question. Bold. I like it.
"I hope I can remember all your questions," Polis responds.
Polis says Coloradans shouldn't focus on the dial/color system because there threat is everywhere.
Polis asks the Anschutz Empire reporter what her third question was. She re-asks it - and adds a fourth question. Anschutz is getting his money's worth.
Polis is now answering a question en Espanol about hospital capacity. He's using the opportunity to go through his key points about distancing and holiday gatherings in Spanish.
I'll say this: telling Coloradans Kill-your-grandma-if-you-want-that's-your-call-champ is a very Libertarian way to govern.
Polis is asked a wildfire question (appropriate, after the state's worst fire season, by size of the largest fires). Says statewide drought and climate are creating a "new normal" of longer, more intense fires. Says he'll work with this & next WH on forest management.
.@chrisvanderveen notes @GovofCO said the Convention Center needs a month lead time to scale up the facility to 2k beds. Polis says they'll activate Saint Anthony (25-80-something beds) and Saint Mary Corwin (25 to 240 beds) prior to Conv Ctr.
Polis says that Convention Center would open with 80 beds and scale up to 2k over a month. Said a few hundred beds could be added each week.
If Grandma comes to your Thanksgiving, she's gonna come in strapped like Boebert.
Great question to the Governor on whether Coloradans have failed and brought this COVID crisis upon ourselves because he's been lecturing us on what to do for months and people aren't doing it.
NEW: Gov. Polis says Coloradans "should know" by now what to do to minimize COVID risk, but suggests the President could reach anti-maskers. "We are able to reach who we reach," Polis said. "I think President Trump would reach additional people who would hang on his word." #9NEWS
And that's it. Polis has concluded his briefing. Little new info or action on the part of the state short of reminding people that you could off your Grandma if you bring COVID to her Thanksgiving.

NEW: Effort to recall @GovofCO Polis needed to turn in 631,000 valid signatures today. Recall organizers turned in zero signatures. #copolitics#9NEWS
This may sound like an embarrassing failure but remember the last recall effort still raised tens of thousands of dollars and was last seen spending those donations at a ham radio shop.
The Colorado Secretary of State's website notes that no recall petition signatures were turned in while the "Dethrone Polis" recall page announces that "Signature Collection is Complete"
NEW: @GovofCO Polis says Colorado expects 100-200k doses of Pfizer vaccine in 2020. Most Coloradans can be vaccinated early in 2021, Polis said. Will thread new details from briefing here. Live feed: 9news.com/article/news/h…#9NEWS#COVID19colorado
"This is going to get worse before it gets better," Polis said, stressing that virus is more prevalent in Colorado than during spring peak. Urges Coloradans to practice social distancing with the "finish line" in sight.
NEW: Gov Polis announces another 30-day extension of statewide mask mandate. "Masks are not as effective as a vaccine, but they're in the 50-70% range," Polis said. #9NEWS#COVID19colorado

Since Wednesday, #HeyNext viewers have donated $26,599 of the $42,000 needed by Safehouse Denver. You can check the rolling total at the link in this thread. If you're able to give $5, thank you! If you can share this, thank you!
The lasting memory I have from The National Museum of African American History and Culture are the photos of Black children being screamed at by white adults. Wondering what kind of lives the children went on to lead. And whether the adults and their descendants are horrified.
So it stuns me that, generations later, there are so many more Americans who want to be captured in images cheering racism. And I wonder what they will think decades from now. And what their children will think if they ever see those images.
