#LoveJihad has moved from flirting & butterflies-in-the-stomach, to legitimate social & legal sanction faster than many relationships I know. Since 5 states (MP, UP, Karnataka, Haryana, Assam) are planning laws against this crime, here are some facts. 1/n
The term #LoveJihad was 1st used arnd 2009 by some Hindu & Christian groups in Karn, Kerala to refer to a shadowy conspiracy by Muslim men to deceive/coerce women into converting to Islam + join terrorism. It has since led vigilantes to harass interfaith couples. 2/n
Since 2009, MANY official investigations have found ZERO EVIDENCE of the existence of #LoveJihad. 3/n
2009: Karnataka CID's HC-ordered probe into 100s of interreligious marriages concluded: "There's no organised attempt by any group to entice girls/women belonging to Hindu/Christian religions to marry Muslim boys with aim of converting them to Islam" 4/n

In Kerala, Christian & Hindu groups in Kerala allege #LoveJihad.
2012: Kerala police called it a "campaign with no substance" & filed FIRs against hindujagruti.org for "spreading religious hatred and false propaganda" 6/n

2014: UP police said there was no evidence of forced conversion in 5 of 6 love jihad cases it investigated.

2018: SC restored the marriage of a Kerala Hindu woman who'd converted to Islam. Hadiya Jahan's family claimed she was a victim of #LoveJihad, despite her testimony that she'd converted willingly. SC said NIA can't probe adult woman's marital status 8/n

2018: NIA investigated 11 cases of interfaith marriages in Kerala from a list of 89 complaints, mostly from parents. (4 of 11 were Hindu men converting to Islam) The NIA found no forced conversion, criminal intent or terror links 9/n

Feb 2020: After Catholic Churches complained of #LoveJihad in Kerala again, Minister of State in the Indian Home Ministry said in Parliament that love jihad wasn't defined under law, and no central agencies had ever reported it to the govt. 10/n thehindu.com/news/national/…
The above is proof of lots of love, but no jihad. There may be anecdotes about suspected #LoveJihad, lots of pamphlets from conservative Hindus & Christian groups, upset parents, some willing conversions, but repeated investigations have found NO EVIDENCE of it happening.

Aunties in my building have been making theplas/masala chappatis everyday to give to an NGO that distributes it to travelling migrant workers. But the conversation every time I go to give my share of rotis is revealing. I've learnt that kindness can exist without respect. 1/n
Some of the comments:
"They just can't listen to instructions apparently"
"What's the need to go home now? Work has started"
"Paapa (bechare), they are so hungry they tear at food like animals."
"Only these people can live in the station like this."
"They are not calm people, paapa (bechare)"
"Police is struggling to herd them. Of course the lathi has to be lifted to make them listen."
And my fav:
"They're going home coz in Jan Dhan account, everyone's got Rs. 1000 each. Aaramagi they can use that."

Excellent story on how the govt has been steadily placing hurdles for Muslims seeking Indian citizenship. To those pro #CAA saying "Muslims can apply for citizenship in the normal route," here's why they can't: not eligible for Long Term Visa, the first step to get citizenship
Muslims from Bangaldesh, Pak, Afghanistan have to pay 213 times the overstay penalty Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jain's from there pay.
RBI changed rules in March 2018, so that Muslims from Pak, Afghanistan & Bangladesh cannot get Long Term Visas and cannot buy land or open bank accounts. Hindus, Sikhs, Jain's, Buddhists, Christians from these countries can. All this before #CAA.

Please read the text of the #CitizenshipAmendmentAct before you believe or disbelieve gurus. It's barely 3 pages.
If you aren't clear why NPR (national population register) and NRC are connected, here, read this:
Step 1: Section 14A, Citizenship Act 1955, on creating a nationwide citizens register and issuing national identity cards. It was added in the Act in 2003.

How are NPR and NRC connected?
Step 2: Read Citizenship Rules, which detail how the citizens register will be made.
This is a little longer but easier language.
Note: The 1st time population register is mentioned ever is in these rules on how to make citizens register.

Having interviewed many grassroots activists who have organised 100s of protests with even over 10,000 people, I've learnt that takes YEARS of mobilising, conversations, leadership, to keep rallies non-violent, especially when the causes are often life & death. + #CAA2019
Twitterati condemning and giving sage advise to students to keep calm, not slap a cop when he slaps a student, probably don't recognise how HARD it is to be non-violent in the face of asymmetric power of the state. + #CAA2019
We can't forget that a student's slap is not equal to trained cops in riot gear shooting bullets, tear gas & a history of quelling protests of all kinds with cases of "kidnapping govt officials", "blocking govt work", causing nuisance etc. #CAA2019

If the govt really wants to help persecuted minorities of neighbouring countries, then why have 62,000 Tamil refugees from #SriLanka, who are refugee camps in TN, been left out of the #CitizenshipAmendmentBill? They are mostly Hindus and Christians.
What about the 100,000 Tibetans, also living in India? Most of them are Buddhists.
