If the govt really wants to help persecuted minorities of neighbouring countries, then why have 62,000 Tamil refugees from #SriLanka, who are refugee camps in TN, been left out of the #CitizenshipAmendmentBill? They are mostly Hindus and Christians.
What about the 100,000 Tibetans, also living in India? Most of them are Buddhists.

Clarification: I spoke to a refugee expert, and I understand Tibetans born in India upto 1987 have been getting Indian citizenship by registration.
But the Sri Lankans haven't.

Whenever someone from BJP talks about #NRC for the while country, even if it's @AmitShah, even if u love this govt, ask, for your own sake:
1. First have you figured out what you'll do with NRC excluded in #Assam? Show me proof this method works to deport illegals.

3. FRRO is the one monitoring visas and foreigners resident in India, picks out illegal stay. How will it work with #NRC?

My investigation with @VICE and @typeinvestigate done over six months, analysing 500+ tribunal judgements received through #RTI. Do read.
@VICE @typeinvestigate 78% of the orders were issued without the accused present, known as an ex-parte judgement. In one tribunal, this was the case in every single judgment.
@VICE @typeinvestigate In 515 judgments analysed, about 82% of people on trial were declared foreigners. The numbers varied widely; one foreigners tribunal declared all its cases Indian, while another declared every person tried a foreigner.

Reporting in #Assam on the chaos & fear arnd the govt naming ppl foreigners, we ran into this funeral. 93-yr-old Ashrab Ali frm Salausuti, Kamrup, drank pesticide yday, after his #NRC hearing, called coz someone filed an objection against his inclusion in the citizens register
Ashrab Ali's name was in the #NRC draft list. Someone filed an objection against this. When Ashrab's entire family was called for a hearing on May 23. The objector apparently didn't turn up, which is common in #Assam today, even tho 3 lakh objections were filed.
His son said that when the #NRC official took his biometrics, Ashrab was extremely worried this meant that he has "become a foreigner". The citizenship of his 2 sons and daughter depends on his own.

Landing in Colombo, it's super easy to get a local SIM card and cheap (INR 750 roughly for my entire 10 days). Something for @incredibleindia to emulate? And Uber works from the airport to Negombo/Colombo (I learned this on the return), 50% cheaper than airport taxis
We rented a motorcycle to travel! Our bike, a simple 250cc Honda from (negombo-motorcycle-tours.com) @ $18 a day + $40 for the local driving permit.

Was super easy to rent as we had prebooked. We picked up the bike and were on our way within an hour.

Terrible events in #SriLanka. This is targeted killings.

We can certainly rule out #LTTE hand in this (whatever that's left) as it specifically targeted the Catholic churches and foreigners.

This looks like a hand of the Islamic outfits.

It seems an independent auditor came to Abu Salim today looking into UN activities. The guards told detainees in advance not to mention that they haven't been fed for months (some of their families are sending them money to buy food with instead, which guards take a cut from).
Messages today from Qasr bin Ghashir dc, southern Tripoli, today, where they’re asking for evacuation & any organisation that can help them.
Sorry for my confusion, the teenager above was being held in Qasr bin Ghashir, but has now been moved to the UNHCR facility in Tripoli for evacuation. He's asking for help for those he left behind.

Went to Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan today. Official population at 53,967, according to @UNHCR as of February 2018. All Syrian #refugees.

In many ways it was not what I expected.
First thing you notice is how remote the location is — some 100 kms east of Amman; 20 kms from Azraq town; 75 kms to Saudi Arabia; 255 kms to Iraq; and 90 kms to the Syrian border — from which its inhabitants fled.
At the same time, the harshness of the setting — a hardscrabble, sprawling 15 square km patch, scratched, etched and stretched out of endless rolling desert.

The perimeter was equally formidable, with security fencing, official patrols, check points and razor wire.

The UNHCR are offering shelter to refugees across the world. Most of those crisis are forgotten emergencies. 236,000 Congolese refugees have fled in Uganda so far. With @Refugees I visited a settlement there, got to meet some of them, and they all had stories to tell. #refugee
Sammy : now blind after he has been persecuted and tortured in Congo. Now lives in a small house in Rwamwanja (the refugee settlement) with his wife. Speaks with a soft voice. Told me he likes to take walks at dusk, because there's less stridence.
Ashaka : young, promising dancer. He told me that there's a sense of violent interruption when you have to flee - your life's suddenly shattered, and then all you can do is wait. He often meets with other teenagers at Rwamwanja's Youth Center for music workshops.
