WORK LIFE BALANCE: MYTH OR REALITY PART 1
The concept of balancing work and life has been a major topic amongst professionals in this age.
The ability to manage the emotional needs of family members with the expectations at work has seemed to be a difficult task.
The business environment has not helped matters and that is not peculiar to any organization. The desire to survive in the midst of the challenging economic environment has kept organizations on their toes resulting in much more sacrifices and devotion to work than ever before.
This thread is to explore the various conditions that are responsible for the imbalance between work and life and evaluate if the desire to balance it is a myth or a reality.
There are many questions to be answered. Does work life balance exist? What are we trying to balance?
We keep working very hard, trying to be the best at work, studying more to become better professionally and academically and also trying to be the best father and mother to our children.
We also desire to be rewarding children to our aging parents.
Can there ever be a balance?
The desire to be successful drives us to embark on all these activities.
However, there seems to be a balance in the days of our parents and grandparents where some of them even come home to have lunch with their children and still return to work but those days are no more.
Today, it seems a choice has to be made in what we actually want while the other one may be the sacrifice that has to be made. There has to be a trade off.
I recall my wife collapsed during one of her postgraduate lectures because she was pregnant.
Her lecturer called and expressed his anger about her coming to class under that condition. The question then would have been: Should she have declined registering for postgraduate studies? Should she have waited to complete raising her children before going for further studies?
There are many factors contributing to the fact that a lot are on our plate and all are demanding attention at the same time. Mothers have resigned their jobs to take care of their children. There needed to be a trade off because they may not all be balanced at the same time
The World of VUCA
One of the factors responsible for the imbalance in work and life in the workplace today is the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) of the world we live in.
The world today is volatile with unstable challenges, uncertain with unknown outcomes, complex with many interconnected parts and ambiguous with lack of clarity. The world is changing with a rapid speed than as ever been known in history.
We are today operating in complex environment made prevalent by the rise of globalization and information technology. Famous companies are disappearing either because they went bankrupt or because they were taken over.
Imagine this: Only 11% of Fortune 500 companies from 1955 are still on the list today.
These factors have made it inevitable to be much more committed to work ethics than ever before.
Sacrifices are required from employees to work much more.
These sacrifices at work have denied workers the satisfaction of being with their families.
Work Life Balance is Role and Profession Dependent
There are roles and professions which require a higher degree of dedication and sacrifice for success.
As an experienced sales and marketing professional, I can say that the higher you rise in the profession, the hotter it becomes and the more the level of dedication required especially with increased competition.
In marketing, competitors are becoming more aggressive and looking for how to increase their own market share in the business environment. They are looking for how to displace you and you have to be on guard else your job is gone.
Therefore, it is imperative as a middle manger or senior manager in the sales profession to expect a level of denial to your family because of work exigencies. Your job requires regular travelling and that takes you away from home.
Another profession that requires a great level of sacrifice is a military or para-military career. This is a profession that requires a lot of postings both locally and internationally and it will be a mirage to expect that there will be a balance with your family life.
As a soldier, you are surely posted away from home and that sometimes may mean being at the war front.
How will you be with the family in such instance when you are always away on official duties.
These instances are pointing to the fact that a work life balance is somehow improbable in this age and with certain professions.
There are many other professions such as a pilot who will most times be in the air or an oil worker who will most times be on the oil field
Watch out for the second part.

When I wrote this tweet, I didn't know that 31 days after, I'll have to be calling senior police officers to come to my rescue. The harm that SARS is doing to our youths is far more than the good the section was created for. @MBuhari and @ProfOsinbajo need to do something #Thread
Being the 1st of October [a public holiday] and in the mood of celebrating the 60th anniversary of 🇳🇬 independence, I took my wife out along with three of her brothers. Another friend joined us and we had a nice time. The 3 brothers and the senior friend then headed home at Ajah.
My wife and I left and headed home. By the way, the senior friend of theirs was in a private business while the eldest of the 3 brothers works in a multinational company. We're almost home when we got a call that SARS stopped them around the 3rd round about [Lekki-Epe expressway]
I know that NASS takes 1.7% of our budget but the number taking this is less than 3,000 with 469 people taking a large chunk of it. Nigerians are feeling trampled upon when they are the only one paying this sacrifice. Let NASS and executive show us that they are with us.t
It will be ridiculous if any member of the political class deny the fact that anger is in the land. The people feel there is no pain with the political class. Leadership is by sacrifice and by example. Fuel price will still go up based on increase in crude price internationally.
When fuel price increases, it will lead to increase in price of goods and services but the political class are immune to this because they have enough money to cushion the effects. I just increased the allocation to my constituency by 36% and that is because I can afford it.
The above question is a mystery that has been difficult to answer over the years. I am an ardent believer in the scriptures but things happen that we can't understand.
I will be sharing several experiences in the below thread.
Below is what the Bible say but I have encountered cases where the man who died appeared to people after they have died.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Hebrews 9:27 KJV bible.com/bible/1/heb.9.…
Before I go into contemporary experiences, those who are familiar with the Bible will remember the event on the mountain of transfiguration where Elijah and Moses who had died hundreds of years ago appeared to Jesus and the three disciples he took to the mountain.
OPPORTUNITIES, SKILLS AND TALENTS.
The wisest man that lived expressed his observation about life and he said he realized that the fastest people don't end up winning the race and the strongest people are not usually the winners in battles.
There is something that causes that...
Also, the wisest people are not eventually the most prosperous, neither is riches for the most intelligent nor success to men of ability but time and chance happen to them all.
I am sure you have seen the above scenarios many times.
An aberration? You may ask...
Does the above indicate that strength, speed, wisdom, intelligence and ability are not important in life?
Not at all! All the above can be referred to as skills and talents but you need more than skills and talents to succeed in life.
I return all glory to God for what my wife and I were privileged to do for your family. It was a great privilege. I love your Yoruba analysis of marriage and when I reflected over it, I realized it is a correct assertion. Unfortunately, the African communal life is fading away.
The African way of life which saw a child as that of the community and not that of the parents alone had a lot of advantages. When a child errs, he is not only corrected by his parents alone, the community intervenes and ensure the act is not repeated again. All these are no more
No wonder every thing is getting out of hand with the black man wanting to be like the white man hence all our moral values are eroded. The same applies to marriage where family members ensure that nothing happens to your marriage. They quickly intervene to prevent a breakdown
MANAGING YOUR PERSONAL REPUTATION DAY 2
You must own the narrative about your reputation. There is a traditional saying in my place which literally says, "it is how the owner of the calabash calls his calabash that the people will help him call it".
The above simply means it's the way you present yourself that you will be accepted. You must never leave your image to whatever people can derive from your actions & inactions. There must be communication. Nature abhors vacuum. Don't allow people to fill the vacuum with rubbish
When you refuse to communicate, you give room to vacuum that must be filled and the filling of that vacuum may be extremely damaging to you as an individual, a group, organization or government. I have seen the present government give room to a lot of vacuum and it's being filled
