Babies born with #BirthDefects are at risk of death and lifelong disability. Identifying ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ with birth defects can help them receive the care they need.

A ๐Ÿ†• guide provides practical tools for tracking birth defects:

#BirthDefects affect 3-6% of ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ around the ๐ŸŒ.
A ๐Ÿ†• resource for global birth defects tracking includes a Quick Reference Handbook for frontline healthcare providers:
๐Ÿ‘‰ bit.ly/2VpmwFx
The most common #BirthDefects are:
๐Ÿ”บCongenital heart defects
๐Ÿ”บNeural tube defects
๐Ÿ”บDown syndrome
๐Ÿ”บHemoglobin disorders (thalassemia and sickle cell disease)
๐Ÿ”บG6PD deficiency (Glucose -6-phosphate dehydrogenase)

Vaccination ๐Ÿ’‰, adequate intake of folic acid or iodine through fortification of staple foods or supplementation, and adequate antenatal care throughout ๐Ÿคฐ can prevent #BirthDefects

An estimated 295K newborns ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ die within 4 weeks of birth every year due to #BirthDefects

Counting the numbers of birth defects, deaths and causes of deaths helps to understand:
โœ… Magnitude of the problem
โœ… How to prevent #BirthDefects
โœ… Plan resources for health systems to improve the lives of children already living with birth defects

๐Ÿ‘‰bit.ly/2VpmwFx
Many #BirthDefects go unreported worldwide, and surveillance systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, are weak or do not exist. By investing in birth defects surveillance countries can adequately provide care to children and families

#BirthDefects tracking helps us understand how common birth defects are around the ๐ŸŒ. Updated resources are available for birth defects tracking programs to improve their efforts, so we can ensure ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ get the care they need

Updated resource for #BirthDefects tracking programs worldwide now includes congenital infections. If you are looking to expand your activities to include infections like congenital syphilis and #Zika, use this ๐Ÿ†• How-To Guide:

It's International Day of Persons with Disabilities

#Disability is part of the human experience.
Over 1B people, ~15% of the ๐ŸŒ's population, live with a disability. Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in life.

๐Ÿ‘‰bit.ly/3mnYqaa Image
#Disability disproportionately affects vulnerable populations:
Lower-income countries have a higher prevalence of disability than higher-income countries. Disability is more common among women, older people and children and adults who are poor.

๐Ÿ‘‰bit.ly/3mnYqaa Image
Half of people with #disability cannot afford health care, compared to a third of people without disability. They are often denied chances to work, attend school & participate fully in society - which creates barriers for their prosperity & well-being.

"Last week saw the first decline in newly-reported #COVID19 cases globally since September, due to a decrease in cases in Europe thanks to the effectiveness of difficult but necessary measures put in place in recent weeks"-@DrTedros
"This is welcome news, but it must be interpreted with extreme caution. Gains can easily be lost, and there was still an increase in #COVID19 cases in most other regions of the world, and an increase in deaths"-@DrTedros
