It took me all year to try to understand what’s happening in India with the ramping human rights violations and rising influence of Hindu nationalism. I interviewed dozens of experts. Here’s an explainer: thestar.com/news/canada/20…@TorontoStar
The Indian government has pushed for laws and policies that have the potential to render millions of Muslims stateless. The government also imposed a military clampdown in the majority Muslim region of Kashmir, arresting thousands. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
Hinduism as a religion has roots from at least the 2nd millennium BCE.
Hindu nationalism, on the other hand, is a political ideology which claims superiority for Hindus, and wants Hindu faith and culture to serve as the cornerstone of the Indian state. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
Modi is the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a major right-wing political party in India that has a strong base of Hindu nationalist supporters and close links to nationalist groups including the RSS. Explainer: thestar.com/news/canada/20…#cdnpoli
Sedition and counterterrorism laws have been used to stifle freedom of expression. The sedition law allows life in prison, and prohibits any written, verbal or visual representation that can cause “hatred or contempt" toward the government. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
Canada has not taken a public stance to condemn the situation in Kashmir, or the Citizenship Amendment Act’s exclusion of Muslims.
This inaction has provided space for Hindu nationalist ideas to spread into Canada, says South Asia scholar Idrisa Pandit. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
"They want to portray India as a vibrant democracy and anything that tarnishes that image, they robustly try to silence … What’s disturbing is that many people accept the simplistic narrative of India as a large democracy and therefore a natural ally." thestar.com/news/canada/20…
After President Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric, will a new Biden-Harris U.S. administration confront India on human rights? Here's what analysts think: thestar.com/news/canada/20…
Important to emphasize that India contains a multitude of cultures and religions, and Hindu nationalism is a political ideology.
People of Hindu faith have been among the thousands protesting for civil rights protections for religious minorities. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
Here's an article on the latest situation on why thousands of farmers are protesting in India: thestar.com/news/world/asi…
I wanted to lay down some of the basics in this first article, and will be looking at other issues, like Hindu nationalism's influence in North America, in future stories. Appreciate any feedback or ideas. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
It seems like international events, particularly in the Asia-Pacific, always has a strong presence in the Greater Vancouver area. See: bc.ctvnews.ca/rally-for-farm…
I first learned about Hindu nationalism and its presence in Canada when I was one of the speakers at a @UBC panel series where audience members jeered and one person threatened journalist @gurpreetonair. Coverage about the incident. This was pre-COVID. globalnews.ca/news/6602149/v…
I spoke at the first panel, not the second one where Gurpreet was threatened. During my panel, the protesters spread themselves around the room and loudly interrupted the speakers so people couldn't get through their remarks. Moderators had to get security for the second event.
Most of my interviews this year were focused on how university campuses have been hotspots for clashes between Hindu nationalists and academics who study India government policies related to religious minorities. If you have a story, please email me.
If you’re having trouble accessing the article, try a different browser. Here are some highlights from @Garossino’s reading. Thanks for all the feedback and info!
People in their twenties told me they were shocked to discover streaks of grey in their hair, but once they thought more about it, they weren’t surprised.
A wide range of studies has shown that stress not only manifests in physical signs like greying hair, weight gain and body aches, extended stress can accelerate aging on a *cellular* level, by shortening the length of each DNA strand! thestar.com/news/canada/20…
I wrote this to try to investigate what's going wrong with my own industry, and the impacts on wider society: Why Canada’s media industry is in more danger than you think — and what we can do to save it thestar.com/business/2020/…@TorontoStar#cdnmedia#cdnpoli
At least 250 Canadian newspapers have shut down since 2013, turning swathes of Canada into “news deserts,” where there are few or no journalists covering those communities at all. thestar.com/business/2020/…@TorontoStar#cdnmedia#cdnpoli
"People have assumed that it is because our business is in terrible shape. Actually, we’ve had more readers — print and online — than we’ve ever had,” says @RichDalMonte.
THREAD: There’s a lot in this story. If you’ve heard rumours that #COVID19 is a Chinese bioweapon, it’s likely linked to this group, founded by Steve Bannon and billionaire Guo Wengui. And now they’re targeting people they believe are “spies” for China: thestar.com/news/canada/20…
These protesters are part of a larger group that has been taking shifts to protest outside journalist and YouTube personality Benson Gao Bingchen’s house almost every day since Sept. 14 for up to six hours at a time. thestar.com/news/canada/20…@huanghebian
Every day, the protesters show up and they chant and parade around the quiet Metro Vancouver cul-de-sac.
Police tell residents to stay inside, and since there’s no law against protesting on a public street, they cannot make arrests. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
The @TorontoStar is restarting it's internship program! Great news for Canadian #journalism. Paid internships are so important because many young reporters can't and really shouldn't work for free.
After undergrad, in which I already had experience freelancing as a student for years, I spent two years in journalism grad school and internships in which my income for those years was negative. I'm only still a journalist now because I'm privileged (parents supported me).
There has always been a high demand for quality journalism, and readers are increasingly willing to subscribe,
NEW: Toronto’s accelerating #COVID19 spread has killed the concept of “social bubbles", prompting officials to urge residents to get close only to other household members.
I spoke with Mark, who very briefly considered putting off ending a relationship that wasn’t working out, so daunting was the prospect of a winter alone in his apartment with only the company of his roommate’s two cats.
U.S. law allows foreign nationals to do most routine volunteer work, such as phone canvassing and door-knocking. But experts say there are still questions of undue foreign influence and ethical concerns: thestar.com/news/canada/20…
This is Canadian software engineer Ravi Jagannadhan. When he moved to the U.S. in 2005, he had no intention to stay.
But @BarackObama inspired him, and he faced no problems as a foreigner on a work visa to go into his local campaign office to volunteer. thestar.com/news/canada/20…
