The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 in an effort to end the widespread and systematic disenfranchisement of Black voters across the United States.

It was extremely effective.

But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted it. 🧵
In a 5-4 decision in a case called Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court decided that key protections granted in the #VRA were no longer needed, in part because the VRA had so effectively reduced voter disenfranchisement
They gutted a provision called *preclearance.*

Preclearance required jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to obtain approval before changing voting rules.

It acted as a safeguard against lawmakers that sought to disenfranchise voters.
After SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act, states across the nation enacted a wave of laws and policies to suppress the vote, unravelling decades of progress.
To restore the protections that preclearance provided, the new Congress MUST prioritize passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

SOME BACKGROUND ON STONE: How did he get involved in all of this?

He’s been a friend of Trump’s since the 1980s, when he first tried to persuade Trump to run for president. In 2016, he finally got his wish, serving as an outside adviser and self-described "dirty trickster."
During the campaign, Stone communicated with the two organizations Putin used to alter and leak stolen emails from Clinton and other Dems: Russian Intelligence and Wikileaks.

Stone wrote to Julian Assange during the campaign to request specific stolen emails not yet made public.
According to private Twitter direct messages obtained by The Atlantic, Wikileaks sent Stone a message the morning after Trump won the election that read: "Happy? We are now more free to communicate."

That alone is damning.

Today will go down in infamy.

Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has been implicated as an unindicted co-conspirator in a crime.

The walls are closing in:
1. He has been personally implicated in a crime.
2. His campaign has been exposed as a criminal enterprise.
It can’t be overstated how significant this is to happen to a sitting United States president. This hasn’t happened since Nixon before he resigned.

Trump stands accused of directing an illegal conspiracy to benefit his campaign and influence the election.
Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to breaking the law by paying off an adult film actress at the direction of Trump for the purpose of influencing the 2016 election.

Cohen also pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax evasion and bank fraud.

It’s June 2018 and the United States is taking children away from their families at the southern border.

Border patrol agents are telling parents that they are taking their kids away for a bath. When the parents follow up, they’re told “you won’t be seeing your child again.”
There are reports that border patrol agents are telling parents that their children will be “put up for adoption.”

Parents are being denied access to a lawyer.

Medical needs for separated kids are going unmet.
These are immigrants seeking asylum, and we’re taking away their children and locking them in cages.

This should send a shiver down anyone’s spine. Treating human beings like this is immoral and unjustified. It goes against the fundamental values that our country is built on.

THREAD: One year ago today, Trump-appointee Deputy A.G. Rod Rosenstein assigned lifelong Republican and decorated combat veteran Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate the Russian attack on our democracy.

The progress the investigation has made proves it must continue.
In just one year, the investigation has moved faster and made more progress than similar past investigations. It is finding crimes. It is opening even more troubling questions than those we had when the investigation began. Nearly every day, new damning evidence is revealed.
Meanwhile, the White House continues to argue that the probe should end and Trump is screaming "WITCH HUNT" on Twitter. That's absurd.

Rather than cooperating with the investigation, Trump and his team are doubling down on a massive cover-up. That's not how innocent people act.
