#IndianLeaks

Oxford-AstraZeneca #Covid19 Vaccine trial results have been published in The Lancet 3 hours ago.
My take from first reading.
✅ The vaccine certainly seems to be safe in the short term without any significant adverse events within 4 months of vaccination.
✅ The vaccine decreases symptomatic mild Covid19 in young people to some extent for at least 4 months.
✅ This Vaccine is cheap; 2-3$ per dollar.
✅ This vaccine only needs standard refrigeration & does not have the practical problems of cold chain with the other vaccines.
❌On vaccinating 5,800 individuals, 30 people got symptomatic covid19. If they were not vaccinated, 100 would have got it thus preventing 70 cases based on the incidence of 200/5800 in 4 months.

My analysis of the lockdown strategy in the developing world for #Covid19.
(Thread)

I have been of the view, since the beginning that lockdowns will not work in the developing world and will cause more damage than good.

Let’s look at the developing countries of the world.
🇮🇳 India

❌ Every week, daily cases rising despite months of lockdown.
❌ Millions of migrant workers became unemployed and were displaced.
❌ Economy heading towards another recession.
❌ Criminal justice system collapsing.
❌ Govt had to ease lockdown!
🇵🇰Pakistan

❌ Cases rising rapidly.
❌ Health system nearing collapse.
❌ Lockdowns eased as it can’t be afforded anymore.
❌Economy wrecked.
❌40% face multidimensional poverty.

My opinions on #WomensRights on this #InternationalWomensDay in this thread.

✳️ It is a fact that women of he world are generally oppressed, sometimes by other women and sometimes by men.
✳️ Also a fact that weak is oppressed by the strong in the world; weak poor oppressed by strong rich, weak Palestinians oppressed by strong Israelis, weak Muslims in India oppressed by strong Hindu nationalists & similarly, the weak women are oppressed by strong men & women.
✳️ It is a responsibility that all humans and Muslims stand up for the rights of the weak against the strong. And hence, we should all do our best to ensure that the rights of the weak women are given to them; to that extent I am a feminist.

My take on Pakistan’s #ExternalDebt. (Thread)

This graph shows the rise of our external debt over the last 10 years. We borrow because we have a big deficit of dollars whereby we are spending more than our earnings so we have to borrow to bridge the gap otherwise we default.
PMLN totally wrecked the economy in their last 3 years & deficits went through the roof. Moreover they artificially maintained dollar rate by pumping borrowed foreign currency into market. You can see the effect on external debt; thus the graph starts to rise steeply from 2015.
When PTI took over, they made major necessary changes; such as letting the dollar rise, decreased imports, increased fuel and energy prices & increased interest rate to decrease the deficit.

A thread on #MTIAct in Punjab Health.

My father is a doctor & became a doctor myself. I graduated in KPK, served in KPK for a year & then came to UK & trained to be a consultant in NHS; while being in contact with the implementation of MTI in KPK. This is my opinion on MTI act.
The idea #MTIAct comes from NHS UK where individual hospitals are autonomous & called "NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals". In Pakistan they will be called "Medical Teaching Institute" Hospitals.
The benefits of #MTIact and its comparison with present health department is as follows.
1) Efficiency:

In present health system, individual hospitals have to get most of the major decisions verified from the central health department leading to inertia and stasis. In MTIs individual institutes can make decisions locally leading to improved efficiency.
