Despite our teams & heads not hearing anything all along, it appears that schools will be going online after all. Here in @Royal_Greenwich I took the decision earlier this week to ask schools to change the way we did things here in #Greenwich
I was deeply disappointed by the actions of @GavinWilliamson & the @educationgovuk who decided it would be better to see us in court rather than cooperate in the best interests of what was happening on the ground here in #Greenwich
The behaviour of the Government in creating an unnecessary row about legal powers would have been better spent sorting this out. Mass testing in schools has been something myself, other London leaders & @SadiqKhan have been banging on about for weeks.
Here in @Royal_Greenwich we were attacked by @amanda_spielman and @Ofstednews for taking the ‘easy option’ in closing schools, but all schools would have remained open under our plans. Will you be criticising the same short term decision we were attacked for I wonder?
What this highlights for me is just how uncoordinated this government are. We’ve had @educationgovuk department taking us to court whilst @DHSCgovuk are announcing plans affecting schools in #Greenwich & across the country. On the last day of term.
My teams here in @Royal_Greenwich have been flat out piloting testing in schools, doing our bit to try and introduce the mass testing we need to make the difference. I’m pleased that we’ve highlighted just how important this is for all schools.
We await further details from the Department about what is happening and will support all our schools in #Greenwich to understand what this means for them - whether they are academies or maintained - as we have done every day since March.
Finally, can I say thanks again to everyone who has got in touch and offered messages of support. Our data has continued to worsen. On Monday, in #Greenwich our infection rate was 254/100,000. Today it is 291/100,000.

Having seen & read a few things online this morning, I just want to make a few points about the way we were treated in #greenwich this week following our ask to schools to change the way we were doing things in the final few days of term.
The @guardian reports Patrick Vallance said yesterday that this new strain was detected in September and by 9th December accounted for 62% of all new cases in London.
In #Greenwich we acted on 13th Dec in response to the increasingly challenging circumstances we were facing.
Cases accelerating and numbers in isolation rising. @MattHancock announced in the House of Commons on Tuesday that a new strain had been found. I’ve checked with our local public health team and this was the first time they were aware.
Residents across @Royal_Greenwich will be in #tier4 from midnight - whilst many people will be understandably be upset about losing #christmas celebrations, it is absolutely vital we all work together across #Greenwich to deal with this new and immediate challenge. Some points ⬇️
1. The rate of infection across #greenwich is climbing incredibly quickly. Tonight, we are at 387/100,000 and our positivity rate is now 12%. @Royal_Greenwich
2. We have tonight been advised that the new strain of #covid19 is highly transmissible. Action is therefore needed to address this. We must do everything we can collectively to reduce our interactions with people as much as possible across #greenwich@Royal_Greenwich
A lot of tweets and messages coming through. I’ll be joining other leaders on a call later and speaking to the @Royal_Greenwich management team shortly so will be in a better position to advise residents of #Greenwich of what this means for us shorty.
Thanks to residents asking about schools and what happened earlier on this week. I’ve double checked with our Director of Public Health & the first we heard of this new variant on Tuesday this week.
There is no doubt that today’s announcement is a devastating blow for those desperately wanting to see our loved ones. However, as @NicolaSturgeon has just said that this strain is up to 70% more transmissible & therefore urgent action is clearly required.
Well it’s been a ‘bit’ of a day here in @Royal_Greenwich & I want to be clear with residents about what’s happening with the @TfL negotiation and what it means for you here in #Greenwich - the negotiations are ongoing but here’s what we know so far...
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the congestion charge is increased to include the south circular. Any #Greenwich resident driving in it would face a £15 charge. This would affect thousands of our residents and more than 4 million Londoners.
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the zip card is scrapped for 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich. The @Conservatives are planning to make 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich poorer. They may talk about levelling up but want to increase your bills each week.
