Residents across @Royal_Greenwich will be in #tier4 from midnight - whilst many people will be understandably be upset about losing #christmas celebrations, it is absolutely vital we all work together across #Greenwich to deal with this new and immediate challenge. Some points ⬇️
1. The rate of infection across #greenwich is climbing incredibly quickly. Tonight, we are at 387/100,000 and our positivity rate is now 12%. @Royal_Greenwich
2. We have tonight been advised that the new strain of #covid19 is highly transmissible. Action is therefore needed to address this. We must do everything we can collectively to reduce our interactions with people as much as possible across #greenwich@Royal_Greenwich
3. Non essential businesses in #greenwich shouldn't open tomorrow. If you were closed in November, you will be closed again now. Outdoor markets are allowed, but essential goods only please. @Royal_Greenwich
4. In quite a significant change from November, places of worship will remain open across @Royal_Greenwich but with social distancing & covid safety measures in place. #greenwich
5. We are awaiting further guidance on shielding and supporting the clinically extremely vulnerable. We expect it to be the same as November. For now, if you fall into one of these groups in @Royal_Greenwich take every appropriate measure to keep yourself safe.
6. Hands. Face. Space. 3 words that are now even more important than Ho,Ho,Ho. It is vital that people wear face coverings to protect themselves and each other across @Royal_Greenwich - more hand washing will not hurt. And keep your distance from others.
7. You can, and you should, leave your home to get tested, or for any other medical reason if living in #greenwich - clearly, we all need to be sensible but we MUST make sure that we get more and more tested. 1/3 of people have no symptoms at all. We need to find them. #greenwich
8. We are doing all we can to provide meals for children across #greenwich next week. The team are meeting tomorrow and we will announce any changes. royalgreenwich.gov.uk/holidaymeals
9. Finally, feeling awful tonight is absolutely justified. If you are struggling, please do not do it alone. ☎️The @samaritans can be contacted for free on 116 123 ☎️ #greenwich@Royal_Greenwich Please take care of yourselves, and each other. #greenwich

Having seen & read a few things online this morning, I just want to make a few points about the way we were treated in #greenwich this week following our ask to schools to change the way we were doing things in the final few days of term.
The @guardian reports Patrick Vallance said yesterday that this new strain was detected in September and by 9th December accounted for 62% of all new cases in London.
In #Greenwich we acted on 13th Dec in response to the increasingly challenging circumstances we were facing.
Cases accelerating and numbers in isolation rising. @MattHancock announced in the House of Commons on Tuesday that a new strain had been found. I’ve checked with our local public health team and this was the first time they were aware.
A lot of tweets and messages coming through. I’ll be joining other leaders on a call later and speaking to the @Royal_Greenwich management team shortly so will be in a better position to advise residents of #Greenwich of what this means for us shorty.
Thanks to residents asking about schools and what happened earlier on this week. I’ve double checked with our Director of Public Health & the first we heard of this new variant on Tuesday this week.
There is no doubt that today’s announcement is a devastating blow for those desperately wanting to see our loved ones. However, as @NicolaSturgeon has just said that this strain is up to 70% more transmissible & therefore urgent action is clearly required.
Despite our teams & heads not hearing anything all along, it appears that schools will be going online after all. Here in @Royal_Greenwich I took the decision earlier this week to ask schools to change the way we did things here in #Greenwich
I was deeply disappointed by the actions of @GavinWilliamson & the @educationgovuk who decided it would be better to see us in court rather than cooperate in the best interests of what was happening on the ground here in #Greenwich
The behaviour of the Government in creating an unnecessary row about legal powers would have been better spent sorting this out. Mass testing in schools has been something myself, other London leaders & @SadiqKhan have been banging on about for weeks.
Well it’s been a ‘bit’ of a day here in @Royal_Greenwich & I want to be clear with residents about what’s happening with the @TfL negotiation and what it means for you here in #Greenwich - the negotiations are ongoing but here’s what we know so far...
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the congestion charge is increased to include the south circular. Any #Greenwich resident driving in it would face a £15 charge. This would affect thousands of our residents and more than 4 million Londoners.
@BorisJohnson is demanding that the zip card is scrapped for 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich. The @Conservatives are planning to make 32,000 children & young people in #Greenwich poorer. They may talk about levelling up but want to increase your bills each week.
