Are you #WritingABook?

You think you need to improve your style of writing? There are a lot of books which can help you with that. Ever tried reading and learning from them? Let's take a look at what help is available in this thread.
There's "The Sense of Style" by Steven Pinker (amzn.to/3hkT4eb) which tells you why we all need a sense of style. It uses research in linguistics and cognitive science to help the author in enabling the spread of ideas and gaining the reader's trust.
Another one is "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott (amzn.to/3aEMKgh) which has been offering authors some practical advice on the craft of writing in a humourous style for about three decades.
"On Writing Well" is a well known classic by
William Zinsser (amzn.to/37MVzmc). He taught at Yale and this book has been praised for its sound advice, its clarity, and for the warmth of its style. It's a must-read if you are writing in #English.
One more classic is "The Elements of Style" by William Strunk (Jr.) and E. White (amzn.to/3hpYwMP). Whether you write a book, or a report, or are into copywriting, you should have read this very thin book (or let's say booklet) if you are writing in #English.
Then there's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" by Stephen King(amzn.to/3rEcSxY). If you search well, most of these can be downloaded. No, I won't give you download links. Pick up 1 or 2 to start with. The info contained may help you with editing your manuscript too!
More can be added to this list, but I've picked only those which are very well known. Those who have been writing for years have almost all these as a ready reference. In case you are just starting, start with "Bird by Bird" and "The Elements of Style".

Writing a #BookReview?

It's too hard they say! Why so? That's because even voracious readers insist that they can't write more than one-two lines about a book. Is that bad? Actually, it's not, because summarizing a 200 pages book in 1 sentence should be called an achievement!
But then the question arises how do we write a longer #BookReview? Let's first see how we can make it a paragraph long. Maybe approaching the problem in steps would make it easier to solve. So we move toward adding one more line to your review first.
Have you noticed that many readers love the touch and feel of a book and even when they read a soft copy or on Kindle, they miss that touch, smell & feel of paper? Well, that's the first thing you CAN talk about. Consider a few examples.

Only Christianity was at that time an exception. I developed a sort of dislike for it. And for a reason. In those days Christian missionaries used to stand in a corner near the high school and hold forth, pouring abuse on Hindus and their gods. I could not endure this.
I must have stood there to hear them once only, but that was enough to dissuade me from repeating the experiment. About the same time, I heard of a well known Hindu having been converted to Christianity.
It was the talk of the town that, when he was baptized, he had to eat beef and drink liquor, that he also had to change his clothes, and that thenceforth he began to go about in European costume including a hat.

Have you heard of New Okhla Industrial Development Area in the New Delhi Capital region? Of course, you have! It's more popular by its abbreviated name NOIDA. These days we have a Greater Noida added to Noida too. The question is why I'm asking about it?
The story goes a few decades back. Indira Gandhi was in power and a new area for development of Delhi NCR was needed. Project engineers started working and the government looked into sanctions and finances required.
Finally, Bagpat, a district in Uttar Pradesh was identified as a suitable location for the development of a new township. It had Meerut on one side, Gaziabad on the other, you can see it as the black dot on this map I got from Wikipedia. Image

"Lotus In The Stone" by @anuradhagoyal takes us on a journey to the dizzying array of deities, temples, festivals, rituals, art, architecture, applied sciences & living traditions of India, that is Bharat, bringing us to an understanding of the society her culture nurtured.
Discussing the book noted author @bibekdebroy says: To appreciate and document this a person has to travel beyond the dotted line, to where history & geography seamlessly weave together in this land of ours.
The author is already well known for her blogs on travel and the #Indian culture which seems to have been lost from popular literature and travelogues in recent times. The book is available for pre-order on the @GarudaPrakashan website - garudabooks.com/lotus-in-the-s…
