On #January6th 2021, Donald #Trump attempted a coup. He failed. But it was absolutely an attempted coup. It followed a familiar pattern: (1/4)

Step 1: The defeated president gives a speech to a group of supporters where he tells them he was robbed of the election, denounces his own administration's members and party as traitors and tells his supporters to storm the building where the voting is being held.(2/4)

Step 2: Supporters, many dressed in military attire and waving revolutionary-style flags, then storm the building where the federal law-enforcement agencies controlled by the current president do not establish a security cordon and quickly overwhelm police.(3/4)

Step 3: The president then makes a public statement to the supporters attacking the Capitol that he loves them but doesn't really tell them to stop.(4/4)

Trump initially resisted deploying the #NationalGuard Wednesday #January6th as the mob of his supporters breached the #CapitalBuilding. VP @Mike_Pence had to step in authorize deployments.(+3)

As the mob began breaking through police barriers, #Trump’s aides started to panic. They pleaded with him to send in the National Guard, as he had done for the #BLM protests over the summer.(+4)

#Trump & minions were giddy- partying while watching supporters breach the #CapitalBuilding. This was their moment- they would be ruling elite for life. Trump set it in motion. No way he was going to call the #NationalGuard to stop it.(+5)

VP Pence, from a secure undisclosed location where he sheltered with Congressional leaders, reached acting Def. Sec. Miller & JCC Milley. National Guard troops were finally activated, but by then the #CapitolBuilding had been overrun.(+6)
