Yesterday, 24 year old man in Cardiff died after being subject to a violent arrest.

His name was Mohamud Mohammed Hassan. This thread is being written to compile everything that has been released over the past 24 hours in one place.

This is Mohamud.

Veteran community activist, Lee Jasper, released this blog last night. We have gotten a lot of this information from Lee's blog, and we are so grateful for his work on this. [2]
Mohamud Mohammed Hassan was arrested at his home on 08/01/2020 8th January 2020 at 11 pm and was forcibly taken to Cardiff Bay Police station. [We are paraphrasing Lee Jasper's words]. [3]

"During his arrest, an upstairs elderly neighbour reported a massive commotion in his flat below.

Mohamud was released from Cardiff Bay Police Station around noon Saturday 10th January without being charged"

"Mohamud was released from Cardiff Bay Police Station around noon 10th January without being charged He was so severely injured he took a taxi home. Seeing a close friend when he arrived outside his house, he told him "Look fam the police have beat the shit out of me." [5]
Mohamud was from Butetown. It is less than 0.3 miles from Cardiff Bay Police station to Butetown. This speaks to the severity of his injuries that he, a healthy 24 year old man, had to take a taxi home after this arrest. [6]
"An elderly lady and friend who lived above him saw Mohamud and was in deep shock at what she saw. His light grey tracksuit was covered in blood, and he had severe injuries to his mouth and was severely bruised all over his body." [7]

"She called his Aunt, who came over immediately. On seeing Mohamud, she broke down in tears. She insisted he go to the hospital, but he said he was too weak and tired and wanted to rest for a while before seeking medical attention." [8]
"Mohamud slept for a few hours, and when a friend attempted to wake him later Saturday evening, he was unresponsive. His friend called an ambulance, and a first responder arrived on a bike. Mohamud's bedroom was too small for her to give him treatment [CONTINUED] [9]
and, he had to be moved with the assistance of his friend and was laid on the kitchen floor while the paramedic administered CPR. Two ambulance paramedics then arrived and declared him dead." [10]
"At least ten police cars attended and they locked off the residence. Mohamud was afforded no privacy nor dignity whilst he lay dead on the kitchen floor. The family attended his home but was refused entry or sight of the body by Cardiff police." [11]
Mohamud and his family deserve privacy and dignity in the peaceful resting of Mohamud's body. His family should NOT HAVE been refused entry or sight of the body by @SWPCardiff. This is not acceptable.

#MaeBywdauDuYnBwysig [12]
The family felt they were poorly treated by the officers in attendance and were left totally in the dark. Bizarrely Mohamud was left on the kitchen floor until 6.45 am Sunday before being removed. [13]

No Family Officer Liason nor anyone from South Wales Police has been in touch with family to explain what happened.

This goes against police procedure. [14]

being released without charge in a distressed state, suffering numerous physical injuries we now need to establish if there is any connection that may have led to his death." [16]

His name was Mohamud. He was 24. He should still be here with us. Say his name. This is Mohamud. Do not forget that he should still be here with us today. [17] Image
Lee Jasper Vice-Chair of BAME Lawyers 4 Justice said "Clearly Mohamud was perfectly fine before his arrest. The critical question the family want answering is what happened to him during his arrest, in transit to and inside Cardiff Police station. [CONTINUED] [18]

"He is very severely injured on his release, so was he offered medical assistance in the police station? His death marks a grim and tragically familiar start for 2021. Black Lives will continue to matter." [19]

#Justice4Mohamud
"His family and the wider black community will want answers. Given the realities of the implicit institutional racism of the South Wales Police, the appalling weakness of the police investigation processes, and the Independent Office of Police Complaints' [20]
and the fact that no police officer has ever been prosecuted for a death in custody, we're unlikely to get justice from a rotten system so stacked against the search for the truth. [21]
Nevertheless, that will not diminish our efforts to hold the police to account and demand justice" [22]

Our lives as welsh language speaking of colour differ hugely from the lives of non-POC who speak Welsh and and people of colour who don’t speak Welsh. A thread. 1/
There is an idea that only white people speak Welsh. This is plainly untrue. Many people of colour speak Welsh, and according to historian @Seimon_Brooks_, around 10% of #Cardiff docklands spoke Welsh during the heyday of shipping in South Cardiff 2/
On a theoretical level, these conversations are emblematic of the insider and outsider dynamic. Who is an “outsider” to the Welsh language? Who is an insider? What hierarchies, if any, emerge, and how are they exploited? 3/

Even if a BAME woman is elected, the Senedd is not fit for purpose. 1 BAME woman won't change the dynamic of the Senedd. If the Senedd had never elected a Welsh language speaking white man, there would be uproar: and its legitimacy would be questioned: so why not 4 race+ gender?
What we have seen is a culmination of 20 years of ignoring discussions on "diversity" [who is "diverse"+ who isn't given location of Senedd in #Butetown, Wales 2nd most racially diverse ward?]. We have seen conversations on gender that resulted in gender shortlists w/o BAME women
Yes, of course it's important for politicians 2 reflect the communities they serve- but what do we do w/ the democratic gap and institutions that normalised a lack of 'diversity' in politics along w/ institutional racism? Who or what groups can benefit from that gap?

A controversial housing development has been given the green light🚦by Cardiff Council despite huge widespread opposition, two committee members failing to show up...yet the development on the site of Track 2000 will be going ahead 1/
Grangetown is the most multiracial part of Wales. Gentrification has made Grangetown and especially south and north Grangetown an attractive area as rent prices rise in #Cardiff, often pushing out Grangetownians who can't afford to live there any more 2/
We need a real radical grassroots campaign against gentrification to secure the longterm health of Cardiff, and to make sure that gentrification doesn't act as a form of colonisation [along with the attitude to esp young BAME people] from/by middle classes 3/

#BritishEmpire is trending on twitter: and so is #BlackLivesMatter. We want to take this moment to raise awareness of the the nature Wales shares with the British Empire 1/
Both colonised and subject to colonisation, Wales has a radical potential for radical solidarity and decolonisation. We need decolonisation, desperately, and anti-colonisation, as colonialism in #Wales is not over, nor is colonialism undertaken by the #BritishEmpire 2/
Grassroots local change with the support of others can harness real tangible long-term change beyond tick-boxes, key performance indicators and unionist political parties (and non-unionist political parties who are complicit in institutional racism and anti-Blackness) 3/
