Supreme Court of India to hold its first hearing on the Suo Motu case of "Remediation of Polluted Rivers". CJI SA Bobde led bench has initiated the task with the clean up mission of entire River Yamuna.

CJI: why has this come up now ? We had issued notices.

Senior Adv Meenakshi Arora: As on January 18, the water quality was excellent. This should be maintained.

Senior Adv Meenakshi Arora: Former Chief Secretary of Delhi , and expert member of NGT was part of a committee formed by NGT in 2018 to look at the pollution of river yamuna. A report can be sought from the River Yamuna monitoring committee appointed by the NGT.

Arora: a report needs to be given on the recommendations and the status of implementation of recommendations given. Haryana has been very candid and said more STPs have been installed. The monitoring committee can tell us about the status etc.

CJI: today we will only seek a report from the committee you mentioned that's all.

Arora: regarding Delhi Jal Board, the water quality is excellent now coming from Haryana. Please ensure that. 3 ppm of ammonia is maintained.

Senior Adv Shyam Divan appears for state of Haryana: This plea is not maintainable by Delhi Jal Baord. Statement of facts are to be contradicted. We need a week to file a detailed reply. We are supplying far more water than required.

CJI: we will allow you time.

CJI: however you must maintain the low levels of pollution as it exist today

Divan: its a complex problem. Issue is occurring withing Delhi and not Haryana. @DelhiJalBoard is projecting inaccurate facts. Please don't pass any such order

CJI: We may order that you maintain the low level pollution in water in our suo motu case

Divan: please don't pass any order. Pass after a week when you have our entire pleadings.

CJI: okay we will only grant you time.

CJI led bench issues notice to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in suo motu case

Senior Adv Mohan Katarki for Delhi: secondary source of pollution needs to be checked too. They are non point pollution which comes from agriculture etc.

CJI: NGT has constituted a committee as informed. We direct the said committee to submit a report to this Court regarding recommendations which is made for improvement of quality of water in Yamuna and extent to which recommendations were implemented.

Yamuna Monitoring Committee made a party to the Suo Motu case.

Senior Adv Arora: Delhi and Haryana always had a dispute regarding quantum of water. We need to focus on quality of water and not digress into discharge of quantum of water.

CJI: not today

ASG Aishwarya Bhati: We have a draft affidavit from CPCB. Delhi has the most stark figures in this case. We need some more time.

Supreme court adjourns the case for after 2 weeks.
