During the war, Nicholas Winton - “Britain’s Schindler” - quietly helped rescue 669 children from Nazi Germany

In 1998, he was in the audience on a TV show

Unbeknownst to him, rest of the audience were people he’d rescued

On #HolocaustMemorialDay it is vital to remember that the genocide didn’t not start with gas chambers

It began with populist, nationalists sowing the seeds of division & hatred, stripping rights, distorting truth & corrupting the institutions of democracy
This is the house from where Nicholas Winton organised the rescue of 669 Jewish children from the Holocaust

The last group of 250 children, scheduled to leave Prague on 1 Sept 1939, were unable to depart

Only two survived the war.

Winton contacted officials, including President Roosevelt, to see if other countries would offer sanctuary

Only Sweden agreed

Wilton estimates a further 2,000 could have been saved

One the children rescued, @AlfDubs, became an MP

Here Alf reads a poem👇
"To save one life is like saving all humankind"

Winton shows the impact one person can have

Among the children he saved, Gerda Mayer wrote a poem to her father - murdered in 1940 - imagining “the blood washed from your shirt, the tears from your eyes, the earth from your bones”

1/. I often chat to Gus who sells chestnuts on the Heath, but I only recently heard his story

In 2007, he & his wife Inez, got news most people only ever dream of

A TV company made them a multi-million pound offer to use their trademark ‘Golden Balls’.
2/. Golden Balls was the nickname Inez had given Gus when they'd met & he'd been a keen footballer

They used the name for their clothes shop/product line

When @victoriabeckham revealed David had the same nickname they contacted the Beckhams to checked there were no legal issues
3/. They licensed the name "Golden Balls" to Endemol to use in the Jasper Carrott-fronted ITV game show

By 2007, the show as was more popular than Deal Or No Deal

It had just been recommissioned & was about to be sold around the globe

Gus & Inez were going to be very wealthy.

"If you see me – shivering & dumbed with loss – stand by me. Because grief needs a witness.”

Today, people in the USA will come together in a moment of collective grief for the 400,000 souls lost to #COVID19 there

#CovidMemorialDay is a day for all of us

Grief is the collateral damage of love. The deeper the love, the more painful the grief

Shakespeare warns
“Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak whispers o’er-fraught heart & bids it break”

#COVIDMemorialDay is a day to put words to our sorrow

One doesn’t truly recover from loss

If you are lucky, you will heal from loss

But never completely

Unless we process our grief it can turn into anger or depression

We've seen a lot of that over the last year

#CovidMemorialDay is a moment to remember

A moment to grieve.

"To live in this world you must be able to do three things:

To love what is mortal

To hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it

And, when the time comes to let it go. To let it go."
