when a positive blood or CSF culture is preliminarily identified as Diphtheroids, the clinician should consider the possibility that the isolate represents #Listeria

#listeria can cause meningitis in pregnancy, elderly & immunosuppressed pts. It can also present as encephalitis, cerebritis or brain abscess, bacteremia, febrile gastroenteritis

#listeria ampicillin is drug of choice. Patients with penicillin allergy: tmp/smx.
If pregnant & penicillin allergy & can’t give tmp/smx: vancomycin or macrolide

Iron is a virulence factor for #listeria monocytogenes & iron overload states are at risk for #listeriosis
