Today is the Day of Remembrance, commemorating the day when FDR signed Exec. Order 9066, authorizing the mass incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans.

@InternetArchive & @DenshoProject present the Digital Library of Japanese American Incarceration:
archive.org/details/digita…
With a grant from the @NatlParkService, we have purchased & digitized 600+ books about the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans, making these often out-of-print books available to researchers, students, @Wikipedia editors & the public.
3/ Ranging from children's books, photo anthologies to scholarly works, the Digital Library of Japanese American Incarceration is among the largest collections of online books about this subject.
#history #JapaneseAmericans #WWII
4/ Working with @Wikipedia editors, we have linked hundreds of citations & Further Reading lists in articles like this one to the actual page in the digital book.
Great for students & anyone seeking greater context.

5/ Now these 600 books are also directly linked to the @Densho Encyclopedia. This stellar online resource is a direct entry point to books, manuscripts, photos, & more.

By bringing these important books online, the @InternetArchive & @DenshoProject hope to spark a new generation of learners. To learn why passing on the story is so important, read @whanamura's personal account.

The donation by @carlmalamud of his lovingly curated cookbooks, got us thinking. What's in the @InternetArchive's cookbook collections?

The biggest collection is this one, featuring 11,752 books on cooking & home economics:
archive.org/details/cbk

#Cooking
The oldest cookbook in that collection is by Bartolomeo Scappi (c. 1500–1577), the most famous chef of the Italian Renaissance. Scappi was the personal chef to 2 popes & compiled this 978-page tome of recipes, cooking utensils & menus.

Do you follow @ReadersFirst, a coalition of 300 libraries representing 200M readers? Here's what they have to say about the Big 5 #publishers business practices vis-a-vis #libraries:
@ReadersFirst From @ReadersFirst: "Big 5’s treatment of literature as a commodity create an intolerable burden on libraries. We seemed doomed to a carousel of only what the Big 5 publishers think is commercially viable now."
3/ "We again call upon The Big 5 to come to the table to negotiate better license terms, encourage libraries to explore mid- and smaller publishers offerings that have better terms and prices—let’s MAKE a market rather than relying on the big publishers alone..."

Recently, the problem of vanished #OpenAccess journals—176 of them—was exposed by @l_matthia @mikaellaakso
@najkoja.

Since 2017, @internetarchive has also been working to quantify the missing articles & extract what we have saved in the #WaybackMachine. blog.archive.org/2020/09/15/how…
@l_matthia @mikaellaakso @najkoja So far the @internetarchive has archived and identified 9 million open access journal articles.
"One of our goals is to archive as many of the articles on the open web as we can, and to keep up with the growing stream of new articles published every day."
@l_matthia @mikaellaakso @najkoja Goal #2: " Another is to look back over the vast petabytes of web content in the Wayback Machine back to 1996, and find any content we might already have but is not easily findable or discoverable."
See the blog for graph of what we have, what someone else has, what's missing.

Legal data provider @LexisNexis's commented on the #Copyright lawsuit by 4 publishers v. @internetarchive.

Turns out lawyers are BIG users of #TheWaybackMachine...something @LexisNexis hopes we can keep running even if we lose the suit.

lexisnexis.com/community/lexi…
@LexisNexis 2/ "The fear is that a victory for the publishers could..destroy the #WaybackMachine.

No other organization provides a backup to this content, so if it’s wiped out, it’s permanently gone."
@LexisNexis 3/ From @LexisNexis: "Even if the @openlibrary is forced to close, information-access supporters (including many lawyers) hope that the organization can continue the #WaybackMachine and other preservation efforts that publishers aren’t targeting in the lawsuit."
