[Thread] 1. South Africa's second batch of 80 000 J&J #CovidVaccines landed this morning (Saturday) at OR Tambo. The jabs have been taken to a secure facility in Gauteng from where it will be distributed to vaccine centres in provinces.
2. How many vaccine sites are there? For the 1st round of 80 000 there were 18 (3 in WC, 1 in Northern Cape and 2 in each of the other provinces). The sites will be expanded for the second batch. Here are the sites we had for the first round: tabsoft.co/2NIYV2y
3. Why are we getting small batches of 80 000 J&J jabs at a time instead of the 9 million we've ordered? Because J&J doesn't yet have @SAHPRA1 approval to distribute its jabs for wider roll-out. This morning's batch is part of up 500 000 jabs we're getting for research purposes.
4. Why is the @SAHPRA1 approval taking so long? Sahpra has to go through loads of data to ensure J&J's jabs are as safe and efficacious as the company says they are. It's the only way to ensure that we're importing quality medicine. Read more here. bit.ly/3r6oVU8
5. Has any other country approved J&J's jabs for roll-out? No, because it's so new. This #COVIDVaccine's efficacy results were only released a month ago, on 29 January, all the regulators are still studying the data: bit.ly/3sBFQOH
6. The US regulator, the FDA, however, issued a statement on Friday night endorsing the J&J #CovidVaccine after a review of the data. The FDA is likely to issue emergency use authorisation of the jab within the next few days: bit.ly/3sBFQOH
7. Why is SA conducting a study with the J&J jab if we already know it works? Because the type of approval required to use the jabs in a trial can be obtained quicker than the approval required for wider roll-out. Doing a trial means we can get some jabs into SA so long.
8. So what are we testing then and who can participate in the study? Only #HealthWorkers can take part because they're the most vulnerable to infection. We're not retesting if the J&J jab works; we're looking at the issues faced when the jab is rolled-out in "real life".
9. How many of the first batch of 80 000 jabs has SA used? By the end of Friday, we had used 63,648. The health department says we're vaccinating about 12 000 health workers a day now.

Breaking: #Ramaphosa says SA moves from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 1 from later this evening once the regulations have been gazetted. Gatherings will be permitted subject so limitations on size.
#Ramaphosa: Religious, social, political and cultural gatherings are allowed. The maximum nr of people at any gathering = 100 for indoor gatherings and 250 for outdoor gatherings.
#Ramaphosa: Nightclubs will remain closed. The sale of alcohol = permitted. But no alcohol can be sold during curfew hours. Masks are still mandatory. Failure to wear a mask remains a criminal offense.
#Ramaphosa: A year after #COVID reached our shores, there are several safe and effective #COVIDVaccines. SA's scientists have led the way internationally with identifying variants.
#Ramaphosa: In the ten days since we launched our #COVID vaccination study/programme more than 60 000 #HealthWorkers have been vaccinated. A news batch of 80 000 J&J jabs arrived in SA yesterday.
#Ramaphosa: The number of #COVID vaccination sites will be expanded this week (for the second batch of 80 000 J&J vaccines) — from 17 to 49. Of the 49 sites, 32 will be at public health facilities and 17 at private health facilities.
[Thread]. 1. Wondering how many people SA has to vaccinate per day to use up our 80 000 J&J jabs in 14 days? (The next batch of 80 000 will arrive 2 weeks after the 1st). Co-principal investigator of our implementation study @LindaGailBekker says between 6000 + 8000. Here’s why.
2. This morning we had around 65 000 of our first batch of 80 0000 J&J #CovidVaccines left, says @LindaGailBekker. So we vaccinated about 5000 #HealthWorkers on Sunday (on Sunday the health department said we had vaccinated just more than 10 000 workers by the end of Saturday).
3. @LindaGailBekker says the official start date for #COVID vaccination was Thursday, 18 Feb. (The jabs arrived just before midnight on Tuesday, 16 February, and had to be transported across the country to sites, so only a few vaccinations were done on Wednesday, 17 February).
[Thread] 1. How many #HealthWorkers has SA vaccinated so far with the 80 000 Johnson & Johnson #CovidVaccinations that arrived this week? By the end of Saturday, 21 Feb, 10 000, according to the health department (there are 1.25 million workers, so many more to go).
2. So how are the #Covid jabs split between the private and public sector? 70% goes to the public sector and 30% to the private sector.
3. If you work in the private healthcare sector, you have to get your jab at one of the public hospital vaccinated sites for now. You can find one of the 18 operating sites here (they will be expanded to include private sites as we get more vaccines): tabsoft.co/2OCkrWI
[Thread] 1. SA is rolling out its first #CovidVaccines in the form of an implementation study for health workers. That means only workers participating in the study are allowed to get vaccinated. So how come #CyrilRamaphosa could get a shot? bit.ly/3qvrvCC
2. Changes to study protocols can be made if there are good reasons. Protocols are "rule books” that stipulate how a study will be conducted. They explain who can take part and what will be tested. SA's roll-out study will look at real-life implementation of the J&J jab.
3. In the case of the J&J jab, our regulator, @SAHPRA1, adjusted the study’s protocol to:
* Include government officials with health qualifications
* Include #Ramaphosa + #Mabuza
The reason? To “encourage vaccine uptake and reduce vaccine hesitancy”. bit.ly/37p7ohW
The latest stats from @HealthZA on how many #HealthWorkers have been infected and have died of #Covid in SA and why we need vaccinate them so urgently:
* Number of infections: 40 000
* Hospitalisations: 6 473
* Deaths: 663
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 100% effective in protecting vaccinated people against #COVID-related death. If all #HealthWorkers are vaccinated, #COVID deaths are therefore unlikely among such workers.
The J&J vaccine provides 85% protection against severe #COVID in SA, so it can also help to dramatically reduce hospitalisations among #HealthWorkers. (We've had more than 6000 health workers in hospital because of COVID so far).
