This is absolutely outrageous and turns our judicial process on its head. To begin with, it is based on the presumption of guilt. #AbLeg #abpoli 1/15
The Provincial Administrative Penalties Act in Alberta is really, really... via @YouTube
- 3 phases, beginning with drunk driving then expanding to cover all provincial legal jurisdiction
- Predicated on presumption of guilt
- Penalties will be implemented immediately and will continue, regardless of whether you appeal
2/15
- You have 7 days to appeal and you must pay a fee to appeal
- If you are poor, you can’t appeal
- If you don’t respond, they can come after you to collect any fine and/or surcharge
3/15
- An adjudicator will be assigned to review the appeal. These are not judges. They will most likely be ex-police officers and so on (probably biased)
4/15
- They get to choose what information they give you to work on your appeal, they don’t have to provide any records with respect to the history of the officer, or the maintenance of a red light camera 5/15
- The government can limit what evidence you can submit and what arguments you can make in your own defence
- All police reports are deemed to have been made under oath – gives police reports a heavier weight than the word of the accused – Police can lie in their reports 6/15
- Data review will be within 21 days of appeal. They don’t need to get ready for this because they already know what the judgement will be.
- Appeal will not be done in person. No day in court. Maybe a phone call or zoom.
- No cross-examination of witnesses, officers, etc.
7/15
- The crown can set limits on numbers of pages or documents submitted for the appeal, maximum duration for video or audio submissions, and may limit the types and formats of content
8/15
- The burden of proof is on the person requesting the review. You are presumed guilty and you need to prove your innocence.
9/15
- The adjudicator can assign weight to the various evidence presented and is not bound by the rules respecting evidence applicable to judicial proceedings. Rules of evidence are meant to keep out bad evidence. This includes hearsay. Hearsay is allowed in this process.
10/15
- After the review, the adjudicator can, if not satisfied with the appeal, confirm the administrative penalty. If they are satisfied, the appellant will receive a notice of the decision within 30 days and administrative penalties will be cancelled.
11/15
- The decision of the adjudicator is final. No further appeal or review is allowed. This basically tosses out the entirety of our judicial process. 12/15
- You can go to the Court of Queen’s Bench to apply to have it reviewed if the paperwork is submitted within 30 days of the order, but that may not be approved. 13/15
- The UCP are creating a process where the government tells you that you are guilty and will be punished and that is it. They don’t need to prove you did anything. You need to prove you didn’t, and you need to prove it in a system that is weighted against you. 14/15
Please write to your MLA, the Premier, the NDP, and the media to express disagreement with this mockery of justice the UCP is imposing on Albertans. 15/15

Isn't it extraordinary? Some conservative Canadian politicians from across Canada have decided that the best response to a global pandemic is to join a group called the Liberty Coalition Canada.
I decided to have a closer look at this "Liberty Coalition". We should be aware of who is organizing and trying to draw supporters across Canada, and what they are setting out to do.

My observations follow...
#cdnpoli #abpoli #onpoli
The "Liberty Coalition" seems to embrace several causes, or "initiatives" as they call them. There's the "End the Lockdowns Caucus", "Save our Youth", "Open Small Businesses", and "The Church Must Gather".

This IS a big deal. People need to understand that criticizing the appalling actions of the Israeli government is not anti-Semitism. No more so than criticizing the appalling actions of the Third Reich is anti-white.
If someone was sexually abused as a child, and grew up to be a serial rapist, you wouldn't say, "that's ok, you were a victim, so it's all fine, keep on doing your thing..." Would you? Having been persecuted does not give anyone carte blanche to persecute others.
The current Israeli government is oppressing, mistreating, and killing people based on their ethnicity. That is wrong. Full stop. They have one of the most powerful military forces in the world. They have a huge economy. They receive unquestioning support from most of...

Jason Kenney bet our money on Trump winning. No doubt he was shocked when whatever the GOP was doing to try to ensure a win didn't work. It was supposed to work, you see. Whatever it was. But it didn't, and here we are, with an angry Premier shouting at and blaming everyone else.
We are seeing a grown man who made a very bad calculation, having a very public meltdown. He invested in a risky deal and it fell through. Now he seems to think he is owed some sort of compensation. That really isn't how the world works.
Of course, all that money is a bit of a windfall to TCE. They are cutting their losses and getting out, laying off workers. And they are going out the door with our money. Why isn't Kenney asking for the oil company to give it back? Unless, of course...

The people moaning and wailing and gnashing their teeth over the delay in vaccines suggest they never learned patience as a child. Pfizer is upgrading their facilities so they can keep up with demand. This has all happened really, really fast. 1/10
This is necessary and they really haven't had time to do this concurrent with developing a vaccine in record time. This, "I want it NOW!" attitude, particularly among political leaders, is disturbing. Very immature. And entitled. 2/10
My grandmother used to say, "Possess your soul in patience" and there was not a damn thing anyone could do to make whatever it was happen any faster, once she said it. It was an important thing to learn. Some things you can't have right away. 3/10

Jagmeet, in case you are confused, conservatives like Jason Kenney's UCP are not your friends. They certainly aren't any friends of Albertans. Do you know they are letting Australians lop the tops off mountains for coal for China? It's not up to PMJT to fix our premier' gambling
With our money. Kenney did this knowing full well that Biden could win and he would cancel it. He bet on Trump. He lost. Unfortunately, he was gambling with Albertans' money. Kenney let Albertans down Yet again. Don't grab this as a stick to bash the Liberals with.
I am completely baffled by your statements, not just on this, but on many subjects. The NDP is not going to be the federal government for quite some time. You are not going to be PM. With the LPC in government the NDP has a much better chance of getting good things done...

Last Monday I had the foresight to order Centre Ice so we could watch the Jets games. On Thursday we had the game on Centre Ice. Today we get the message saying we aren't subscribed to that channel... 1/7
So I phone them to sort it out. Of course, no matter how "important " my call is to them, they do not have enough people to answer the phone. I have a wait time of 20 to 25 minutes. Roughly the entire first period... 2/7
This has been a problem every season since the Jets came back to Wpg. See, in Alberta, the NHL doesn't want people watching or cheering for out of market teams. We live in AB, so they figure we should cheer for the Flames or the Oilers. It doesn't work that way. 3/7
