NEW—CDC warns #COVID19 is "on the cusp" of potential resurgence, with cases & deaths rising. Highly-transmissible #B117 variant can "hijack our successes", as fatigue leads precautions being "flagrantly ignored".

Been warning for over a month. So tired.
2) The #B117 is serious. It is not only 40-60% more contagious, but also more severe. And it also might be causing kids outbreaks worldwide. Italy 🇮🇹 is just one. Israel too.
3) If you think #B117 is bad—wait until the #P1 variant from Brazil 🇧🇷 infects the world. We have to stop this cycle of surges and mutations.
4) #B117 is currently 20-25% of all #COVID19 cases now in the US. It’s looking bad. Likely 50% by end of the month - maybe March 20-25th. Mark my words. It will cause a serious surge in April. helix.com/pages/helix-co…
5) This was #B117 last month once schools reopened in UK... notice how much it diverged. They were dropping in lockdown... but clearly kids stood out differently.
6) This rise in Denmark also driven by #B117 which has taken hold as the dominant variant there.

💡EFFECTIVE—Single-dose Oxford–AstraZeneca #COVID19 vaccine followed by a 12-week booster. Vaccine efficacy was significantly higher at 81·3% after two standard doses given at an interval of >=12 weeks, versus 55·1% when doses <6 weeks apart. Good news! 🧵

📍SCHOOL OUTBREAK OF #B117 in JAPAN 🇯🇵—Eleven people north of Tokyo have been infected with a new B117 #COVID19–none have any UK travel history. 6 cases were kids under 10. Ten of the infected all linked to a school for kids age <10. Matches kids trend. 🧵

2) This matches the latest UK 🇬🇧 data showing kids age 5-12 have the highest positivity of #COVID19. And in England, the #B117 is nearly 95-99% dominant variant.
3) Meanwhile, here is latest French data. Kids 0-9 have now the highest % of #B117 of any age group. And very sharp trend towards more B117 the younger one is.

UNIVERSITY OUTBREAKS—In all 3 UK universities studied, #COVID19 cases increased amongst students shortly after term began—number of outbreaks identified. Following increased tests, use of remote learning & self-isolation by students—cases quickly dropped.

2) In general, the outbreaks were observed to start from multiple introductions of the virus, with infections thought to originate from both students’ home residence communities and also the local communities in which the universities are found.
3) “Most outbreaks appeared to grow by student to student transmission of a subset of the initial infections. In Cambridge and Portsmouth, systematic testing allowed **asymptomatic spread** between students to be tracked and was **found to play a role in outbreak growth**. ⚠️
