I am THRILLED to finally announce that I was awarded a $400k @NSF CAREER grant! This is a five-year research and educational grant that will be largely focused on understanding and mitigating discrimination against #LGBTQ+ people. 1/ #EconTwitter nsf.gov/awardsearch/sh…
The first study is of #discrimination against #Trans and #Nonbinary people and racial and ethnic minorities in access to mental health care. This is joint with @elben, @LFumarco + others. Pilot results here 👇 2/N nber.org/papers/w28164
The 2nd study builds on the 1st, as we seek to determine how #COVID19 has affected access to mental health care. When the pandemic surges, does appointment access decrease? (Very early results from the start of the pandemic suggest yes.) Joint w/ @LFumarco + @elben + others. 3/N
The 3rd study seeks to quantify sexual orientation discrimination in access to mortgages. We see that #LGBTQ+ people face credit and homeownership disparities. Could discrimination partially contribute to that? Do state laws banning #LGBTQ+ discrimination in credit help? 4/N
The 4th study will use textual analysis techniques to study subtle discrimination. E.g., when individuals respond to inquiries from someone who is #LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC, are they less polite? This goes beyond the simple response coding usually seen in audit studies. 5/N
A major part of this grant is the educational component. First, I have plans to try to improve access to undergraduate research experiences, especially for underrepresented students. These experience are important for improving the poor pipeline of #BIPOC in #economics 6/N
Please read this great article by Amanda Bayer, @GaryAHoover, and Ebonya Washington to learn more about how #Economics lags behind other fields, including #STEM, in diversity, esp. at high levels like grad school and faculty positions.👇 7/N #EconTwitter aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…
I'm planning to increase access to honors theses (not enough students do these) and create lots of undergraduate research assistantships. Thus far i've been able to work with an amazingly talented and diverse team of undergraduates at @Tulane. Looking to expand that! 8/N
Obviously, this is only a drop in the bucket, and I am excited to do more to improve barriers that BIPOC, women, disabled and #LGBTQ+ people face in studying and researching #Economics. 9/N
Perhaps the biggest part of my NSF grant is establishing (funded!) mentorship workshops for #LGBTQ+ Ph.D. students in Economics. The AEA climate survey found that #LGBTQ+ Ph.D. students face discrimination and less access to mentoring. 9/N #EconTwitter aeaweb.org/resources/memb…
These mentorship workshops would build on the work done by me, @NWPapageorge, @mpbitler, and @LGBTQ_Econ in estimating a virtual mentoring program for #LGBTQ+ economists and Ph.D. students. 10/N #EconTwitter
These workshops would be modelled after the hugely-successful CeMENT program by @AEACSWEP and is heavily inspired by @maya_rossin 's mentoring workshops for female Ph.D students in Econ. I am in the early planning stage on this and haven't finish my mood board yet ;). 11/N
I have a HUGE thank you thread to make to everyone who got me to this point. I'm going to write that up tomorrow because apparently writing 12 tweets at one time is too much for me right now. Thanks for the support everyone! 🥰12/N
