Who Is Our Local General?

Switzerland is famous for its gun culture. One of the great factors is that, upon leaving the military, soldiers keep their service weapons. They become members of a well-ordered militia thereafter.

2) This was precisely the vision of our founders when they created the 2nd Amendment to our Federal Constitution. Local communities with well-ordered militias are near impossible to conquer. There's a very simple reason. Conquest requires surrender.

3) If you consider the function of General George Washington in our Revolution, you clearly see that resistance requires leadership. There are no such things are armies without generals. A militia must be led. In America, who is the leader of local forces?

4) The ancient answer is the County Sheriff. The fact that this is an ancient answer matters and must be known. One of the great objectives of the left is to wipe out history. They wish to literally erase it. We must not let them.

5) That is why we must know who our local general is. Freedom is not free. Freedom must be protected against all who would attack it. Our reading list has been built to offer crystal clarity over the mandate to protect freedom, locally.

6) Book #3 answers this question in all its historical context. As I have previously stated, it is the most fun book on the list. It reads like an action story, while it covers over 1,200 years of history.

7) We'll come back to history in a moment. Right now, consider two facts. The first is that a sheriff is an elected official, with his or her own office. Bowker's book is the History of the OFFICE of the Sheriff. The second is the Sheriff's Oath of Office.

8) "I do solemnly swear that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States, and of the State of _________; that I am duly qualified to hold office under the Constitution of the State;

9) "and that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of _________ County Sheriff on which I am now about to enter.
So help me God."

10) Consider the factors. A sheriff is elected. He or she is NOT, therefore, beholden to appointment by a higher magistrate. Rather, a sheriff is beholden to the people of the county, his or her voters. And a sheriff is the highest law enforcement officer of the county.

11) And then there's that oath. Many law enforcement officers swear the same oath. The problem is that they're not beholden to the votership of their local jurisdictions the way a sheriff is. We know humans strive to please their bosses.

12) Yes, humans break oaths all the time, if they feel that their public face will not be attacked over it. But not everyone. Keeping an oath in private, when no one will ever know yay or nay, that is the definition of honor. We must delve this.

13) I have already made contact and formed a friendship with my local sheriff's office. I have not reached out to my local police department, but soon will. My police department is headed up by an appointee, as are all police forces. Yet, they all swear oaths.

14) Consider the character required to face down one's own appointer, at risk of livelihood, and live up to an oath by resignation. No, it's not impossible. Yes, it is highly unlikely. I hope to be friends with my local head of police. I do NOT expect his or her oath to stand.

15) Let's go back to history. If you don't know the importance of the Magna Carta, do please look it up. It is the first document establishing our rights of freedom as Englishmen. It was signed 561 years PRIOR to our own Declaration of Independence.

16) Here's Bowker on topic:

"The Sheriff played a prominent part in the creation of the Magna Carta, with fourteen former and existing holders of the office either in an advisory capacity or as the main participants.

17) "Of the 63 clauses, 27 are directly concerned with the Sheriff and his office. The Magna Carta is looked upon as the finest proof of the importance of the Sheriff in the governing of medieval England.

18) "The Magna Carta, firmly and permanently established the importance and authority of the Office of Sheriff."

I wonder. Of our 3,083 sheriffs in America, how many know this grand tradition, and its role in defining the very freedom of our nation?

19) I mentioned above the conquest requires surrender. We may also add that governance requires consent. Until my recent studies, I always thought of the "consent of the governed" as an innovation, a special form of freedom. This is not the case.

20) Consider any tyranny you may choose. In every case, the tyrant depends upon the consent of the governed. He must terrify them into compliance. The truth is that ALL government is based upon the consent of the governed. It is definitive of governance itself.

21) As took place at Runnymede, the battlefield where the nobles defeated King John's forces in 1215, the power of the underlord OVER the overlord is literally written into English law. This is the true basis of all freedom. And it was the sheriff who embodied this freedom.

22) If we're to understand where we are today, we must also recognize that the Office of the Sheriff has often been purloined by evil magistrates throughout history too. Robin Hood's Sheriff of Nottingham was King John's man, the very king of Magna Carta.

23) A general may be for freedom or against it. Our local generals, our sheriffs, may easily be purloined by today's American enemies of freedom. When they are, they are our enemies, against us, using the powers of their office to enslave us. This must be faced.

24) Our election 2020 was stolen. We have come to the end of America's first run. Our Constitution holds no force today. If it is to be restored, it will be so county by county throughout our land. Our faithful sheriffs are our greatest hope. Those who will stand.
