Potential #eruption started in #Fagradalsfjall - being investigated after reports of bright lights from the area #Reykjanes #Iceland #volcano #icerupt
Web cams show the bright light from the area. The Coast Guard helicopter being dispatched.

It has been confirmed by @krjonsdottir at @Vedurstofan that a volcanic eruption has started in #Fagradalsfjall on #Reykjanes peninsula in #Iceland - photo from @Vikurfrettir
The #eruption in #Fagradalsfjall is not expected to cause serious problems for air traffic since eruption in that area do not produce as much ash as eruptions under glaciers. The @kefairport and #Reykjavik airport are temporarily closed per protocol. #icerupt
The eruption is happening in an uninhabited area so lava is not expected to cause significant issues. Eruptions in the area are believed to last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. #icerupt
Civil Protection in #Iceland - @almannavarnir - has requested people not to go into the area close to the eruption. The road between Hafnarfjordur and Keflavik has been closed since there are so many people driving towards the area.

According to the head of @almannavarnir - @VidirReynisson the location of the eruption is in #Geldingadalur by #Fagradalsdjall. Scientists believe it is a relatively small eruption - will be better known once Coast Guard has flown over the area.

The estimated location "Geldingadalur" literally means "Castration Valley" which is on the side of #Fagradalsfjall...yes we have fun names of things in #Iceland Photo by Tinna Björk Stefansdottir
Being told the better translation is "Unic Valley" - still good names :-)
Due to potential SO2 gas emissions from the #volcanic #eruption in #Fagradalsfjall people living in Thorlakshofn (Þorlákshöfn) are asked to stay indoors, close windows, and increase their heating temperature to reduce the ability of gas to get inside. #icerupt
Scientists say lava is flowing to the South and West from a fissure #eruption. First photo of the fissure from scientists at @Vedurstofan #icerupt #Fagradalsfjall Photo from @vedurstofan
The fissure is estimated to be about 200m long #eruption #icerupt #Iceland
Newest estimate is that the fissure is around 500m long. There is lava flowing both to the South and West - but due to the location lava is not expected to cause any issues.

Prediction of gas and ash emissions from #Fagradalsfjall #eruption from @belgingur - gos.belgingur.is
People living in Thorlakshofn, Selfoss, Hveragerdi, and Vestmannaeyjar and surrounding areas are asked to close windows and increase the indoor heat to create negative pressure that keeps SO2 gas from eruption out.
The temporary closure at @kefairport has been lifted and the airport is now fully operational. A flight from @wizzair is expected to land around 00:25 GMT and passengers can expect to see the eruption as they approach the airport. #bonus
All use of drones in the area near the #eruption has been banned at least until 12:00 noon tomorrow since helicopters will be operating in the area.
Scientists classify the eruption as a "small eruption" and don't expect it to last very long. It may however be the start of a new era of eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula which has not had eruptions for 800 years.
The lava fountains from the fissure eruption are estimated to reach 100m height. The fissure itself is on a small ridge and lava flows into the valley floor but is not spreading far out.

Map showing potential lava inundation model - as can be seen, most likely the lava will not go very far. #icerupt

This is not the first time there is an eruption in Iceland on my birthday - 11 years ago we had the Fimmvordurhals eruption, a precursor to the Eyjafjallajokull eruption, and my amazing wife (seen below) gave me a helicopter flight as a present.
According to scientists from @Vedurstofan and @almannavarnir the eruption activity has greatly reduced from when it started at 20:45 last evening. This is now a minor eruption with limited activity. #icerupt

According to scientists, the following scenarios are possible:
1) Eruption ceases in the next days/weeks
2) New fissures open up near the current one or along the magma chamber
3) Lowered danger of large earthquakes near the eruption
4) Up to 6.5M earthquake by Brennisteinsfjöll
People visiting the eruption are reminded that:

1) New fissures can open up at any time
2) Lava can move quickly and collapse at the edge
3) Craters are growing in height and can collapse
4) Explosions can occur if lava reaches water
5) Lethal gasses can collect in valleys

We may not call this a "big eruption" but in order to realize the scale - one has to find the "tiny people" walking next to the lava to give you a sense of scale...
Yes - the #eruption in #Fagradalsfjall can be seen from outer space #icerupt

Strong signs of a potential #volcano #eruption near #Keilir on #Reykjanes peninsula. Scientists reporting #earthquake patterns that are similar to the start of an eruption. Eruption likely to start within the next few hours. Image
The ICAO airport code for @kefairport and #Reykjavik airport have been raised to Orange - which indicates a high likelihood of imminent eruption. Rescue teams are being put on standby. Coast Guard @gaeslan helicopter to fly over the area shortly. Press briefing scheduled for 1600
This potential eruption is not expected to cause any damage to infrastructure and towns/cities according to @almannavarnir. The eruption has not yet started and is far away from habited places.

Many have asked about what effects a potential #eruption in the #Reykjanes peninsula on @kefairport & #ReykjavikAirport. Based on standard procedure all airports in 120km radius from a #volcano get closed immediately and then reopened when @Vedurstofan issues ash advisory Image
The @kefairport location is optimal, even though it may be close to the potential eruption site since it is located on higher ground, greatly reducing the threat from lava flows. Depending on the magnitude of the eruption planes might have to change flight paths on arrival. Image
Given how few flights there are daily to/from #Iceland this is not expected to cause major issues. The Civil Aviation Authority @isavia is going through its response plans and preparing for the potential effects of an eruption. Image

Based on the latest satellite data there are signs of #magma buildup. Over 30cm of rising is the highest seen so far in the area. This has caused scientists to add a potential scenario of a volcanic #eruption in the area west of Keilir mountain in #Reykjanes peninsula. #icemagma Image
This magma buildup is the likely cause of the #earthquake swarm over the past few days. Most likely location if #magma does reach the surface is behind Keilir and #lava would most likely flow only to uninhabited areas. Image
Potential #eruptions in the #Reykjanes peninsula are not explosive eruptions but rather basic lava eruptions - similar to the #Holuhraun eruption in 2014. The area is known for eruption periods, lasting 1-200 years, and calm periods lasting like this one for 800 years.
