(1) There's an active shooter incident in Boulder, CO, with reported injuries.

Early info is still patchy, so I will wait for more info before discussing details.

Remember: There _could_ be more than one shooter but usually there is not.

(2) I was planning to write about the Asian Spas tragedy now that several days have passed.

Both (partisan) sides exploit (a) these tragedies, and (b) the background socio-political environment of the past 18 months or so.

Some of us are trying to "lower the temperature."
(3) Granted, this incident might turn out to have no connection to national politics. But the choices made when reporting on an incident can turn it into a political football.

All violence is wrong, whoever does it, and whoever is targeted.
(4) Any pandemic causes mass disruption and can change the course of history. The 1918-1920 Spanish Flu Epidemic did that. Why would we expect this pandemic to be different?

There were mass murders before the pandemic. It's possible a higher frequency & severity is emerging.
(5) My message, as always, is to breathe, take a step back, and ask yourself how you can help those around you. Instead of freaking out and spreading anxiety no one needs right now.

And consider donating blood regularly, if you're able. Donations are down, everywhere.
(6) This guy appears to be on scene and is sharing video clips. Stay safe, Sir.

(7) Good point. No one should be sharing photo or video from the scene right now. I haven't covered a live event in a while so had forgotten to mention that.

(8) One suspect was recorded by media helicopter being led away by police. We should not assume from this that there are no other suspects still at large.

Once they have secured the scene there is usually a stand up press briefing and further briefings as more facts emerge.
(9) In my experience, those official briefings are where the most credible of the available facts come out (on the day.)

Workers sheltering in place often message loved ones or even post live on social media. Treat these reports with extreme caution.
(10) Reports that a shooter starting firing inside a pharmacy that was providing Covid vaccinations.

This wouldn't be a surprise to security experts like @OliviaTroye who have warned about the evolving domestic terrorism threats.

If true, this may affect the rollout.☹️
(11) We all need to lift our game with security in the buildings where we live, work, and play.

Especially in healthcare settings. I've reported on mass shootings in these settings before, eg 2018 in Chicago:

(12) IMO we can't afford the luxury of prioritizing our political beliefs ahead of helping our neighbors stay alive.

Like it or not, you and I live in countries that are a society, and what we do can impact others.

Don't want a vax? Fine, don't get it. Others need one, stat.
(13) Regardless of where and how this tragedy started, the dynamic is the same. Someone, somewhere, decided violence was his or her solution to whatever was ailing them.

Not just in the US, in all our countries there are powder kegs ready to go off. No gun? Knife, vehicle, etc
(14) I say that bc it doesn't matter if the perp can't access a firearm, legal or otherwise. They can be very inventive.

Here's another survival tip: See something, say something.

If that person doesn't act, find someone who will. There are no excuses.
(15) Source for my earlier note about the pharmacy.

I will likely start a 2nd thread about this event soon. I will link the new one in the last tweet of this thread.

Police briefing set for 7.45pm Eastern.
(16) Unconfirmed reports of a number of deaths in the #BoulderShooting. Brace yourselves for the news, which the PD will probably give at their briefing in a few minutes.

Remember, we don't need to know the motive rn. Let the investigators do their job. Pray for the survivors.
(17) Apparently the press briefing has now been pushed back to 6pm MDT / 8pm EDT. This often happens. I'd rather get fuller details later than partial info now.

(18) The delay could be due to a Police operation at a nearby apartment. Possibly a second suspect.

Either way, my thoughts are with all the first responders and others working to help in Boulder today. Temperature there is around 36 deg F atm, will hit 29 overnight.
(19) Many people are distressed about the challenges we're facing this year.

Distress can lead to suicide, and homicide.

The US has a free 24/7/365 @distressline that I first heard about while covering hurricanes.

Share this info; you never know who it may help.❤️
(20) Here is thread #2.

(1) Thread #2 on the #BoulderShooting of 3/22/2021.

First press briefing coming up in a few minutes.

My earlier thread on this incident is here:

(2) Police briefing now underway.

PD Commander confirms multiple fatalities, including one LEO.

One person of interest in custody.
(3) This is most odd. They are refusing to say how many people died, citing the ongoing investigation. Honestly, how hard can it be to give us a ballpark number?

They've had several hours. Media have been giving numbers but ofc they are unconfirmed.

(1) Below is the 12/4/16 thread being talked about in 2021. She hasn't yet resigned & will prob end up deleting the tweets so take screenshots. Mine are dated 12/5/16 bc timezones.

Also, her racism appears in many other tweets from recent years. Here's how to find them.
(2) Paste this into the Twitter search field: Asian from:AliMCollins

Replace "Asian" with any other term you want to find, eg AAPI.

It's also a great way to find your own tweets, or anyone else's. I wouldn't be able to find mine without it.
(3) IDC about the San Fran school board or similar bodies. I just like finding examples of rank hypocrisy, dishonesty, and/or bigotry in general, whether it's on the political left or right.

I'm no longer in a political "tribe" such as pro-MAGA, anti-MAGA etc. Long story...

(1) As a hurricane watcher (amateur, from behind a screen) I take an interest in other disaster types like earthquake, tsunami, & volcano.

International media coverage of the #Fagradalsfjall eruption in Iceland misses the mark a bit. Here's why.
(2) I see this phenomenon all the time, whenever New Zealand has an earthquake, tsunami or volcanic eruption.

Few in the media are trained in the responsible reporting of such disasters. They aim for clicks & ratings with little regard for public safety (anywhere.)
(3) Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) usually issue media guidance & I've read such materials produced by the USA's FEMA.gov (the largest EMA in the world.) Unfortunately FEMA's website redesign makes it hard to find them now, but I'll add links below later on.

(1) Here's a link to my thread about Trump getting the Covid vax himself in Jan 2021 and trying to keep that a secret so as not to alienate the anti-vaxxer faction within his fanbase.

Now about some of the headlines today:
(2) Biden said "President Harris" and SO WHAT. No one cares. That is, no serious person.

I don't think those who voted for Biden did so bc he's an energetic, inspiring leader for them.

They did it to get rid of Trump. And, after seeing his sore loser routine, I now see why!
(3) I support conservative policies so, from early 2016 to late 2020, Trump represented the best chance of seeing those policies implemented. And if he had behaved like an adult after 11/3/20, the #PostTrumpGOP would have a decent chance of doing well in the midterms and 2024.

This would be funny if it wasn't so close to the truth. Many times in past yr, Trump has shown by his actions, omissions &, sometimes, his actual words, that he is at best indifferent to otherwise preventable deaths.

eg Failing to deploy enough DCNG for the known threat on 1/6.
And for those quibbling about the cause of each death linked to 1/6:

The Trump supporter who was trampled by the crowd as they pushed through a line of USCP in riot gear outside the Capitol is (so far) the clearest case.

That line was the key place where security failed.
Trump apologists disregard whatever you say after quoting 5 deaths "caused by" the rioting. They have swallowed the lie that no rioter "murdered" anyone, esp. Officer Brian Sicknick.

The investigation into his death is ONGOING, folks. Nothing was disproven by anyone so far.

(1) Thread: Military women.

Even when I was a Trump supporter I didn't have much time for this under achieving trust fund kid. Like DJT, Don Jr continues to say and do things that damage the GOP.
(2) Former President Trump has lost the support of many Americans, esp. where LEOs and military are concerned.

He did not have their back on 1/6. He, like all of us, knew that political violence was likely that day, and he did absolutely nothing to try to prevent or reduce it. Image
(3) Tucker's comments about women in the military were monumentally stupid. Women are allowed to enlist and, as such, their uniforms should fit properly, especially life-saving body armor. Most military personnel are not in combat zones most, let alone all of the time.
