💡ANTIBODIES FOR NEWBORNS—Pfizer & Moderna #COVID19 vaccines are effective in pregnant and lactating women, who can pass protective antibodies to newborns.

Huge—The antibody levels were "strikingly higher" than from natural infection during pregnancy.🧵

2) Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard looked at 131 women who received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Among the participants, 84 were pregnant, 31 were lactating & 16 were not pregnant
3) The vaccine-induced antibody levels were equivalent in pregnant and lactating women, compared to non-pregnant women. The antibody levels were "strikingly higher" than those resulting from coronavirus infection during pregnancy, the team noted.
4) “These vaccines seem to work incredibly effectively in these women," said one of the researchers.

In addition, the team found that women passed protective antibodies to their newborns, measured in breast milk and the placenta.
5) “"Nearly all the moms were getting a pretty decent level of antibodies to their babies," said Alter, who added that additional research is needed to understand how long those protective antibodies last in newborns.”
6) “While the team found similar antibody levels in women vaccinated with both vaccines—they found higher levels of IgA antibodies in pregnant women who received the Moderna vaccine—this type of antibody may be transferred more efficiently to babies, for a longer period of time.”
7) “There is some reason to think that having higher levels of IgA immunity might be more protective," Alter noted. She said additional research into this finding could help inform policy decisions about which vaccines are used for pregnant populations.”
8) “"MGH and Brigham started to talk to the health care workers that were eligible for vaccination, that were also pregnant, and they created a study to empower pregnant women with the ability to track their responses...
9) “but to also develop data that could essentially help the entire globe approach vaccination and pregnancy for the first time.

"It was really just a force to be reckoned with, both from the OB-GYN/provider perspective, but also from the community. It was inspiring."
10) there is a very strong relationship between mother and infant #SARSCoV2 antibodies. This is great news—especially that pregnant mothers and their infants can benefit from vaccine-induced antibodies.

Hospital ICUs overwhelmed despite fast vaccinations—Chile 🇨🇱 made a critical mistake—its government eased restrictions on travel, business and schools much too early, creating a false sense of confidence that pandemic was over. This always been my fear. 🧵
nytimes.com/2021/03/30/wor… Image
2) “But the country’s speedy and efficient vaccination drive — only Israel, UAE & Seychelles have vaccinated more per capita — gave Chileans a false sense of security and contributed to a sharp spike in new infections and deaths that is overloading the health care system.”
3) “The surge in cases, even as >1/3 of Chile has received at least the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, serves as a cautionary tale for other nations looking to vaccination drives to quickly put an end to the era of beleaguered economies, closed borders, and social distancing.

Not sure if wise—German 🇩🇪 Health Minister and 16 state health ministers on Tuesday decided to suspend the routine use of the AstraZeneca #COVID19 vaccine for people agr <60 at an emergency meeting. But allowed <60 under discretion of personal doctors. 🧵

2) I’m head scratching — if this uncertain clotting thing is real, then why didn’t UK or India (one of the largest maker and user of it) find it in their country? UK has top notch epidemiologists. It’s the same vaccine after all, unless it’s a batch issue?
3) If it’s a batch issue, then that should be able to be traced. But I haven’t seen data it’s a batch issue yet either.

Bold claims needs replication. And this clot thing needs to be replicated in UK and other countries besides 🇩🇪 that uses AstraZeneca. Canada should check too.

FLORIDA UNDERCOUNTING COVID DEATHS—new study says 4,924 excess deaths should have been counted as resulting from #COVID19. Deaths were determined by Florida Governor directly-appointed medical examiners, which have “been subject to political pressures”. 🧵
news.yahoo.com/florida-covid-… Image
2) “The impact of the pandemic in Florida “is significantly greater than the official COVID-19 data suggest,” the researchers wrote.
3) “They came to that conclusion by comparing the number of estimated deaths for a six-month period in 2020, from March to September, to the actual number of deaths that occurred, a figure known as “excess deaths” because they exceed the estimate.”

Bad US trajectory—proportion of cases #B117 is increasing at a rate of ∼7.5% per day.

“U.S. is on a similar trajectory as other countries where B.1.1.7 became dominant, requiring immediate and decisive action to minimize #COVID19 morbidity & mortality”🧵
cell.com/cell/fulltext/… Image
2) There were several introductions of B.1.1.7 in December 2020. Florida and California the earliest. And #B117 was actually introduced twice in Florida! Image
3) most US states seeing increases again.... 34 states in fact had increases in last week.

BREAKING—unexpected change—WHO chief Dr. Tedros said the accidental lab leak theory in China required further investigation & ready to deploy more experts to do so—after some members of expert team raised concerns about China’s refusal to share raw data.

2) “More than a year after the coronavirus pandemic began, the World Health Organization released a report on Tuesday laying out theories on how the virus first spread to humans — but it is already raising more questions than answers, including from the health body’s own leader.”
3) “The report, drafted by a 34-member team of Chinese scientists and international experts who led a mission to Wuhan, China, examines a series of politically contentious questions, including whether the virus might have accidentally emerged from a Chinese laboratory.”

Interesting challenge study in Brazil—

A small town in Brazil is running a #COVID19 vaccine science study street by street aiming to track the real-world impact of a vaccine in halting transmission. They are testing SinoVac’s CoronaVac.🧵

2) Serrana – a sleepy town in São Paulo state home to some 45,000 people – was chosen last autumn to host ‘Project S’, an unprecedented study that aims to answer looming questions about the real-world impacts of coronavirus jabs.
3) By vaccinating the entire city in stages researchers hope to track whether someone who is inoculated can still transmit the virus, and how quickly vaccines contain the pandemic.
