YOUNG ADULTS MOST AFFECTED—Long-Covid symptoms are affecting about 1.1 million people in the U.K., with about half that number saying the disease is harming their day-to-day lives, government statistics show. Top #LongCovid age group? 25-34! Thread 🧵 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
2) “About 196,000 of those people said their ability to undertake regular activities was significantly impacted, the Office for National Statistics said on Thursday. The figures detail those still grappling with the coronavirus after four weeks and were self-reported to doctors.
3) The figures mark the first time the ONS has analyzed how the pandemic will affect the population over time. More women than men had lingering affects from the disease, and more young people than older ones were suffering.
4)
“People who tested positive for Covid-19 are around eight times more likely to suffer prolonged symptoms than observed in the general population,” said Ben Humberstone, head of health analysis and life events at the ONS.
5) the % reporting symptoms at 12 weeks seems highest in younger adults and middle age adults. But many kids as well.
6) About 6% of the population was hesitant to take vaccines against the virus, down from 9% previously in early December
About 1-in-5 black people were reluctant to take the vaccine, down from 44% previously
7) At least 1-in-8 people aged 16 to 29 were reluctant to take the vaccine. The same portion was recorded for those in the most deprived areas
8) There seems to be a confusion of highest prevalence— at 12 weeks, among positive COVID, prevalence of symptoms highest in 25-34 age group.
But highest overall prevalence in the population (regardless of timing, and not just positive), it is 35-69 age group.
9) Bottomline, #LongCovid is concerning. And serious in any age group. We CANNOT just look at deaths and hospitalizations! Yet govt leaders refuse to take action until deaths and hospital beds are filling up — this completely dismisses surging cases and #LongCovid!
10) out of 1.1 million studied in UK:
674,000 people reported that long COVID negatively impacted on their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities.
Of these, 196,000 reported that their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities had been limited a lot.
“ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER” of phosphate factory 🏭 polluted water—32 million gallons per day are leaking out of a 800-million-gallon holding pool at industrial site near Tampa Bay prompted evacuation of residents within about a mile of the plant—worsening.🧵 axios.com/tampa-bay-mana…
2) Florida Department of Environmental Protection said draining (the wastewater pools) was the only way to prevent "a containment failure and catastrophic release."
3) The wastewater pools at the now abandoned Piney Point fertilizer factory is long considered one of the “one of the biggest environmental threats in Florida history.”
Outbreak in Vancouver Canucks hockey 🏒 team. “Privately, there is a lot of concern that medical evidence suggests more positive #COVID19 tests could follow. @NHL announced Canucks would not practise until at least Tuesday, nor play again until Thursday”🧵 sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/ri…
2) And also variant cases have been found among the Canucks hockey team outbreak.
3) As we know, Vancouver in British Columbia 🇨🇦 is the new epicenter of the largest #P1 variant outbreak outside of South America. P1 is very contagious.
Update on AstraZeneca saga—UK has now found 30 clotting cases (22 of the specific kind found in Germany) out of 18.1 million AZ shots administered. That rate is 1:600,000 shots. This is very very low, but also 6x lower than the 1:100k found in 🇩🇪. #COVID19 reuters.com/article/us-hea…
2) also, in the UK report.... 0 cases of clotting found out of millions of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccines.
3) UK report emphasizes: “On the basis of this ongoing review, the benefits of the vaccines against COVID-19 continue to outweigh any risks and you should continue to get your vaccine when invited to do so.”
2) I swear someone was worried about this #P1 issue in British Columbia recently last week somewhere... but sure, that was too “alarmist”. Nothing to worry about they said.
