WOW—The world’s largest #P1 variant outbreak surge outside of Brazil has now solidified with 480 total cases in British Columbia 🇨🇦

2) I swear someone was worried about this #P1 issue in British Columbia recently last week somewhere... but sure, that was too “alarmist”. Nothing to worry about they said.

3) Many P1 cases in BC 🇨🇦 were traced to Whistler ski resort area. The problem with that? Whistler is a famous tourism hotspot for holiday travel.

“We’ve also seen transmission from travel to and from other communities across B.C. from the Whistler area.”

4) Just 8 days ago, the number of total cases of #P1 was just 140. It has now more than tripled!!!

For those who dismissed #P1 and the troublesome no-mask-in-schools and continued BC indoor dining then... history will remember who you are.
5) Many have been warning. But the reluctance of BC Premier @jjhorgan and BC health chief Bonnie Henry to act or even admit worry amid oncoming train wreck was horrid.
6) An ongoing problem among many political leaders is they don’t understand exponential math—especially when they start out slow but quickly builds up. But it was EXPONENTIAL ALL ALONG!!!

Failure to act and failure to plan, is planning to fail.
7) And by March 22nd, BC already knew the first 84 cases of #P1 (already huge number!!!) was not due to international travel. That should have set off alarm 🚨 bells immediately and triggered indoor dining closures (can’t believe they were allow) and mandatory school masks then!
8) Moreover, BC’s top scientist Dr @sarperotto says sequencing (to finding mutations) is slows and hence variants of concern numbers suffer from “severe underreports”

9) Reminder—#P1 is much faster transmission potentially. Possibly 2 to 2.5x as fast as old common strains. This would make it more contagious than even #B117
10) And there is potential reinfection risk with #P1 that may pierce prior immunity to previous common strain infection. This is from a renowned UK group.
11) I’ve been trying to call to attention the cataclysmic crisis with the #P1 variant in Brazil 🇧🇷... and poses a threat to the world.

P.s. just got word today that WH in discussions with Brazil govt finally.
12) the Canadian 🇨🇦 BC article mentioned more young adults going to hospital than before. Any data from Brazil 🇧🇷 to support that? Unfortunately yes... #P1 possibly leading to more severe illness in younger adults than last year.
13) UPSETTING — I don’t know why BC health chief @DrBonnieHenry keeps insisting variants of concern (B117 P1 B1351) are “not causing a difference” than older strains. Patently false—it’s been known for months that #B117 is faster & #B1351 & #P1 worrisome.

15) vaccinations work. But let Chile 🇨🇱 be a lesson for us all not to make the critical mistake of relaxing and removing all mitigation too early before 80%+ are fully vaccinated. Must still use masks and airborne precautions before then.
16) Now an outbreak in Vancouver 🇨🇦 NHL hockey team. Variants found in some cases too.
17) UPDATE— the @NHL @Canucks outbreak is growing worse. Now #P1 is confirmed. Many players are very sick.

“ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER” of phosphate factory 🏭 polluted water—32 million gallons per day are leaking out of a 800-million-gallon holding pool at industrial site near Tampa Bay prompted evacuation of residents within about a mile of the plant—worsening.🧵

2) Florida Department of Environmental Protection said draining (the wastewater pools) was the only way to prevent "a containment failure and catastrophic release."
3) The wastewater pools at the now abandoned Piney Point fertilizer factory is long considered one of the “one of the biggest environmental threats in Florida history.”
