New 50% efficacy study of Brazil-predominant vaccine CoronaVac (by Sinovac) in Manaus 🇧🇷 among healthcare workers when #P1 ~75% dominant. Not a trial, but the study found a 1st dose >=14-days efficacy of 50% on symptomatic #COVID19, ~32% if +asymptomatic. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
2) Sorry I meant ~35% if asymptomatic included with the symptomatics. But it’s not significant. Wide CIs.
3) Sinovac’s CoronaVac efficacy is all over the board. It was 50% for 2 dose efficacy in a Brazil trial, but it had 91% efficacy in early Turkey trial, and 65% in an Indonesia trial.
4) Then Turkey revised down its earlier 91% symptomatic efficacy to 83.5% in March.
But they note CoronaVac “prevented hospitalisation and severe illness in 100% of cases, saying the six people who were hospitalised were all in the placebo group”. google.com/amp/s/mobile.r…
5) another lab study “found that plasma from eight people vaccinated five months ago with CoronaVac “failed to efficiently neutralize” P.1. The study didn’t show if CoronaVac can still stop people getting sick from the variant”
6) However the Brazil researchers at Butantan Institute “stressed that the vaccine is 78% effective in preventing mild cases that needed treatment and 100% effective in staving off moderate to serious cases.”
7) it’s really hard to pin down the exact P1 efficacy since trials didn’t sequence the cases for which variant. We just know in Manaus that it was 75% roughly during the study.
Meantime here is some data on the mRNA vaccines and #P1 neutralization (lab study, so not efficacy)
“However, protection with only one dose is estimated to be 3%; for those with two doses with less than 14 days is 27.7%; and 56.5% effectiveness for those who have the second dose more than 14 days ago.”
“yippee!!!” ~the disgusting email Trump advisor wrote to Trump’s Asst Health Secretary after pressuring and forcing CDC leaders to muzzle the opening sentence of a report about spread of #COVID19 among younger people & blunt data unfavorable to Trump. 🧵 washingtonpost.com/health/2021/04…
2) “Trump appointees in the Department of Health and Human Services last year privately touted their efforts to block or alter scientists’ reports on the coronavirus to more closely align with then-President Donald Trump’s more optimistic messages about the outbreak”
3) “Even as career government scientists worked to combat the virus, a cadre of Trump appointees was attempting to blunt the scientists’ messages, edit their findings and equip the president with an alternate set of talking points.
💡GOOD NEWS: Pfizer has filed with the FDA to seek emergency use authorization for adolescents ages 12-15 for its #COVID19 vaccine! Trial so far shows ~100% efficacy (18 cases in placebo, 0 in vaccine group). Pfizer applying for worldwide approvals too. 🧵 cdn.pfizer.com/pfizercom/2021…
2) The plans is: “Pending regulatory decision, our hope is to make this vaccine available to the 12-15-year-old age group **before the start of the 2021 school year**.”
3) “BNT162b2 was well tolerated with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age. All participants in the trial will continue to be monitored for long-term protection
and safety for an additional two years after their second dose.”
Being vaccinated does NOT mean that you can have a relationship w/ an underage girl & pay her to “travel” w/ you as a Congressman—then show off nude photos to colleagues while sitting on the floor of the US House of Representatives.
Sharing again because important—vaccines in pregnant women are safe & maybe protect the baby. Also, antibody levels in response to vaccine>>infection. Thus, “even if you've had #COVID19, getting the vaccine will lead to a more robust antibody response”. 🙏 npr.org/sections/healt…
2) The 131 participants had been vaccinated with either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; 84 were pregnant, 31 were lactating, and 16 were nonpregnant 18- to 45-year-old women. The study involved patients and
3) Blood samples were collected at the time of the first and second dose of vaccine, and again after six weeks.
"The levels of antibodies, which is what we're looking for in response to vaccination, were similar between the groups," Gray says.
3) To be clear, although 4.3 mil UK residents have confirmed #COVID19, & 1.1 mil have #LongCovid symptoms, it’s not 25% because the 1.1 mil were picked up via a survey captureing asymptomatic cases, hence 14%. That said, #LongCovid in symptomatic cases is likely higher than 14%.
2) What about overall chance of dying if intubated in Brazil 🇧🇷 hospital recently? 72.8%. Last spring—60%.
3) Brazil’s crisis is almost unimaginable. Brazil’s 4000+ deaths a day is significant - even though Us is 50% larger in population, Brazil 🇧🇷 is much much younger in age distribution compared to a much more elderly US pop. Thus it’s not just equal to 6k US—Brazil likely worse.
