💡GOOD NEWS: Pfizer has filed with the FDA to seek emergency use authorization for adolescents ages 12-15 for its #COVID19 vaccine! Trial so far shows ~100% efficacy (18 cases in placebo, 0 in vaccine group). Pfizer applying for worldwide approvals too. 🧵 cdn.pfizer.com/pfizercom/2021…
2) The plans is: “Pending regulatory decision, our hope is to make this vaccine available to the 12-15-year-old age group **before the start of the 2021 school year**.”
3) “BNT162b2 was well tolerated with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age. All participants in the trial will continue to be monitored for long-term protection
and safety for an additional two years after their second dose.”
4) And yes it’s the same dosing for teens 12-15. They are testing lower doses separately for younger kids, hence why they will take longer to conduct.

My god India 🇮🇳... and it’s not just more testing, because positivity had quintupled (5x) in recent month. India could be the next Brazil 🇧🇷 in terms of #COVID19 crisis scale.
2) India crisis is also due to mixed messages and complacency, writes @AmyKazmin.
“Mixed messages from the prime minister and health authorities left the public playing down the risk of the virus”
3) I hope people realizes how important India is... it’s also the world’s largest maker of vaccines for COVID. But it recent halted all exports due to this surge. Hence Canada 🇨🇦 is now delayed in its vaccine deliveries due to the crisis there in India. amp.ft.com/content/6f6705…
2) Oh but COVID isn’t real some of you say? But next time you get into a car accident and need to goto the ER and get surgery... guess what—ambulance late, ER is over capacity, no operating room or surgeons available to repair that sliced aorta...
At least 2700 inmates have died from #COVID19. None deserved it. A month after Bruce Norris had a life sentence commuted, he died of COVID while waiting release. In TX, a new mom w/ only 2-year term, died shortly after giving birth while on a ventilator.🧵 nytimes.com/interactive/20…
2) “The virus shot through many institutions, leaving inmates desperate for ways to avoid getting sick. At Pickaway Correctional in Ohio, which housed about 1,900 inmates, they tried to turn bed sheets into tents to separate themselves; four in five inmates were infected anyway.”
3) “At an immigration detention center in Farmville, Va., nearly every detainee — 339 in all — was infected. And at the Fresno County Jail in California, where most inmates are held on charges for which they have not yet been convicted, more than 3,800 were sickened.”
We epidemiologists have been shouting from the rooftops since December to no avail. Evidence was clear as day. Now we are in middle of another global surge for the 8th week in a row. #COVID19
2) And it’s not just Europe... India 🇮🇳 and Brazil and countless other places seeing surges driven likely by variants.
3) Anyone remember this damn thread?! How there is a new emerging pandemic surge because variants like #B117 is bifurcating the pandemic into two? Countless didn’t listen.
⚠️Dangerously negligent! “With the surging number of COVID-19 variants, (BC 🇨🇦 health chief) Dr Henry said BC would cease tracking individual variants, & proceed on assumption that variants are now dominant in community transmission.” This is so wrong🧵 globalnews.ca/news/7746859/b…
2) “Our strategy moving forward, given this high rate of (variants of concern) that we’re seeing in British Columbia, will be to no longer routinely sequence for confirmation. We just assume those screened positives will be the variants,” she said.
3) Why is this so damn wrong? Because we need to know which variants there are to know the properties of their transmission speed, track severity, possible Reinfection breakthroughs, and if mitigation working for what types.
📍ITALY 🇮🇹 SCHOOL REOPENING: Nationwide in Italy, 15-20 days after schools reopened, #COVID19 surged. The “rate of growth of daily #SARSCoV2 cases in all Italian regions provides some evidence in favor of a link between school reopening and resurgence”.
