⚠️Over 1 in 7, or 1.1 million people now suffer #LongCovid in the U.K. 🇬🇧

📌~14% who got #COVID19 in UK study suffer persistent symptoms at 12 weeks.

📌29% of all #LongCovid are under age <35

📌Top 2 occupations: healthcare workers & teachers.🧵

statista.com/chart/amp/2456…
2) Frontline healthcare workers are among the largest group affected. Teachers are the next largest group.
3) To be clear, although 4.3 mil UK residents have confirmed #COVID19, & 1.1 mil have #LongCovid symptoms, it’s not 25% because the 1.1 mil were picked up via a survey captureing asymptomatic cases, hence 14%. That said, #LongCovid in symptomatic cases is likely higher than 14%.
4) "The risk of severe consequences from #LongCovid are very significant to young people", says UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock

5) Moreover, 7-8% of kids age 2-16 among positives have #LongCovidKids at 12 weeks.
6)“Self-reported long COVID symptoms were adversely affecting the day-to-day activities of 674,000 people in private households, with 196,000 of these individuals reporting that their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities had been limited a lot”
ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulati…
7) “13.7% continued to experience symptoms for at least 12 weeks. This was eight times higher than in a control group of participants who are unlikely to have had COVID-19”
8) “Of study participants who tested positive for COVID-19, symptom prevalence at 12 weeks post-infection was higher for female participants (14.7%) than male participants (12.7%) and was highest among those aged 25 to 34 years (18.2%).”
9) Now there is the issue of #LongCovidKids too... the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends all kids to be examined for post #COVID19 assessment before any physical activity.
10) The AAP even recommends medical assessment for all kids who survived #COVID19 even if they had no symptoms.

Explosion of #B117 across Europe.

We epidemiologists have been shouting from the rooftops since December to no avail. Evidence was clear as day. Now we are in middle of another global surge for the 8th week in a row. #COVID19
2) And it’s not just Europe... India 🇮🇳 and Brazil and countless other places seeing surges driven likely by variants.
3) Anyone remember this damn thread?! How there is a new emerging pandemic surge because variants like #B117 is bifurcating the pandemic into two? Countless didn’t listen.

⚠️Dangerously negligent! “With the surging number of COVID-19 variants, (BC 🇨🇦 health chief) Dr Henry said BC would cease tracking individual variants, & proceed on assumption that variants are now dominant in community transmission.” This is so wrong🧵
globalnews.ca/news/7746859/b… Image
2) “Our strategy moving forward, given this high rate of (variants of concern) that we’re seeing in British Columbia, will be to no longer routinely sequence for confirmation. We just assume those screened positives will be the variants,” she said.
3) Why is this so damn wrong? Because we need to know which variants there are to know the properties of their transmission speed, track severity, possible Reinfection breakthroughs, and if mitigation working for what types.

📍ITALY 🇮🇹 SCHOOL REOPENING: Nationwide in Italy, 15-20 days after schools reopened, #COVID19 surged. The “rate of growth of daily #SARSCoV2 cases in all Italian regions provides some evidence in favor of a link between school reopening and resurgence”.

Detailed 🧵 by @DGBassani Image
2) 70% of Italy region saw surges after reopening. The mean time delay was just 16 days!
3) the other regions still had increases. Just longer or shorter time delays.

“yippee!!!” ~the disgusting email Trump advisor wrote to Trump’s Asst Health Secretary after pressuring and forcing CDC leaders to muzzle the opening sentence of a report about spread of #COVID19 among younger people & blunt data unfavorable to Trump. 🧵 washingtonpost.com/health/2021/04… Image
2) “Trump appointees in the Department of Health and Human Services last year privately touted their efforts to block or alter scientists’ reports on the coronavirus to more closely align with then-President Donald Trump’s more optimistic messages about the outbreak”
3) “Even as career government scientists worked to combat the virus, a cadre of Trump appointees was attempting to blunt the scientists’ messages, edit their findings and equip the president with an alternate set of talking points.

2) The plans is: “Pending regulatory decision, our hope is to make this vaccine available to the 12-15-year-old age group **before the start of the 2021 school year**.”
3) “BNT162b2 was well tolerated with side effects generally consistent with those observed in participants 16 to 25 years of age. All participants in the trial will continue to be monitored for long-term protection
and safety for an additional two years after their second dose.”

Being vaccinated does NOT mean that you can have a relationship w/ an underage girl & pay her to “travel” w/ you as a Congressman—then show off nude photos to colleagues while sitting on the floor of the US House of Representatives.
