For too long, we've lived under the gun lobby's reckless, dystopian, and outright deadly (!) vision of the Second Amendment. They willfully misinterpret the Constitution to bestow civilians with unfettered access to firearms.
That was *never* the Founder's intention.
As the 9th Circuit Court affirmed just last month, the Second Amendment does NOT mean unfettered access to guns beyond reason. We can — and should — enact life-saving, sensible gun regulations.
(PS You can see my thread on that recent court ruling here.)
There are many gun reform measures we can enact that are consistent with the Second Amendment AND keep us safe.
They include common-sense measures like background checks, industry oversight, safe storage mandates, etc.
And they include the measures announced today by @POTUS.
The gun lobby's interpretation of the Second Amendment is why America has a gun violence epidemic *unmatched* by peer countries. Americans kill each other w/ guns at 25x the rate of peer countries.
No, the Founders did not intend for this.
And it doesn't have to be this way.
The NRA and gun lobby want us to believe the Second Amendment is unlimited because of one reason:
Look, change is hard. We've lived under the gun lobby's vision of the Second Amendment for so long that it can be hard to see another path.
But we can end this gun-fueled fever dream. We can unite, learn the facts, and create a safer, brighter future. #EndGunViolence
I'm proud to lead @bradybuzz, one of the nation's oldest gun violence prevention organizations.
I believe that, together, we can find the common ground in common-sense solutions & create a safer American for us all. I hope you will learn more & join us. bradyunited.org

.@WhiteHouse's 6 executive actions to reduce gun violence will:

(cont'd)
5️⃣ issue an annual report on gun trafficking to provide data to inform lifesaving policy solutions
6️⃣ nominate former ATF agent @davidchipman as @ATFHQ director to oversee and enhance gun industry oversight
40 years ago on March 30, 1981, a bullet changed the course of U.S. history.
White House Press Sec Jim Brady was shot in the head when a gunman tried to kill President Reagan. Jim was paralyzed. But he used the tragedy to take on the NRA & change our nation's gun laws.

President Reagan was struck by a single bullet. He'd feel the effects for years. Two officers were also wounded.
Jim was shot in the head. He'd been on the job as Reagan's @WhiteHouse press secretary — his dream job — for just two months. cc @POTUS
The news that day falsely reported that Jim Brady was dead. It's not hard to undertand why — the scene itself was gruesome, and Jim's injury was near fatal.
3/30/21 marks 40 years since Jim Brady was shot in the Reagan assassination attempt. He was paralyzed for life but didn't let that stop him. @POTUS can honor Jim Brady & save countless lives by taking immediate action to reduce gun violence. #TheTimeIsNow
BREAKING: In a huge blow to the NRA, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that there is no right to carry firearms — either openly or concealed in public.
This is much-needed good news following recent high-profile gun massacres in Atlanta and Boulder.

We at @bradybuzz were proud to submit an amicus in this case. Its 9th Circuit ruling dismisses the NRA's "more guns everywhere agenda."
It rejects the NRA's dangerous argument that the Second Amendment entitles virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 to carry guns virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚.
This we know: The majority of Americans — including gun owners — support common-sense gun reform measures.
More than 90% of Americans want sensible gun laws.
We understand that the Second Amendment does not mean unfettered access to guns beyond reason. npr.org/2019/10/20/771…
The NRA used to have the text of just the second half of the Second Amendment emblazoned across their Virginia headquarters.
Hmm, I wonder why?
🧵Thread
I know because, as a Virginian, I have spent years passing by (and protesting at...) the NRA's Fairfax headquarters — which they're getting kicked out of, but that's another thread for another time 🤣virginiamercury.com/blog-va/declar…
So why this Second Amendment erasure?
For decades, the NRA has tried to mislead people into thinking the Second Amendment has nothing to do with a "well-regulated militia."
...But that's why the Framers added the 2A to the Constitution.
In ratifying the Second Amendment, the Founding Fathers never intended to design an America where a right to shoot and kill overcomes the right to live. #GunReformNow
Guns don’t help further any aspect of public life.
They don't belong in grocery stores
They don't belong at state capitols
They don't belong at pollings places
They don't belong in places of worship
They don't belong in schools
What we're seeing in America is the gun lobby vision of the Second Amendment. They misinterpret the Constitution to entitle (white) civilians to walk the streets with AR-15s. In their view, the right to firearms trumps the right to live. #GunReformNow#GunControlNow@bradybuzz
