Story 18- it is about how Bhagwan Shiva protected Madurai when Varuna Dev sent the giant waves to destroy the city.

Abhisheka Pandyan was ruling Madurai Kingdom & he was very devoted towards Chokkanathar/ Sundareshwarar.Abhisheka Pandyan used to perform Abhishekam to Chokkanathar regularly.On the Tamil month of Chithirai (April/May) on Chithirai Nakshatra-Pournami (Full Moon) day
he performed all type of Abhishekam to Chokkanathar/
Bhagwan shiva.On that very same day,Indra Dev also used to worship Sundareshwarar & perform Abhishekams.He had to wait until Abhisheka Pandyan Poojai got over.After that,Indra Dev performed Shiva poojai & returned to Indralok.
That time,Varuna visited Indralok.He saw Indra Dev not in a good mood.Varuna enquired Indra Dev.He told that his Shiva Poojai got delayed due to Abhisheka Pandyan Poojai to Chokkanathar.Varuna Dev asked Indra Dev on why he is feeling bad even though he did perform Shiva poojai.
Indra Dev told Varuna that Madurai Chokkanathar gave him relief from the Bhramahathi dosha &also releived Airavatam from the curse of Duruvasa Rishi so doing Shiva Poojai to Chokkanathar was very special to him.Varuna Dev asked if Chokkanathar would cure his chronic stomach ache.
Indra Dev warned Varuna dev not to doubt power of Chokkanathar & told that he will understand by himself.Varuna Dev decided to test the power of Chokkanathar.
He ordered giant ocean waves to destroy Madurai city.Ocean waves rose as great deluge to submerge Madurai city.
People of Madurai were terrified by the approaching ocean waves.Abhisheka Pandyan& people surrendered to Chokkanathar to save them from this disaster.Bhagwan Shiva/ Chokkanathar ordered four clouds worn by him in his locks of hair to suck the ocean water approaching Madurai.
They did so immediately.The ocean water was dried up.People of Madurai & Abhisheka Pandyan worshiped Chokkanathar for saving them.
This is last story of Madurai Kaandam.

Parijata tree was in Indraloka which was one of gifts he received from churning of Ocean to obtain Amrit.
This beautiful #sculpture depicts Indra Dev chasing Shri Krishna for stealing parijatha tree branch from Indralok

Krishna has 4hands with Shankha,Chakra,Mace&Lotus holding Satyabhama tightly,mounted on Garuda. Garuda has a beautifully carved Parijata tree trunk in left hand& a weapon in his right hand, attacking Indra.
Other side is Indra,riding on Airavata.Indra can be seen attacking Krishna with his Vajrayutham.Airavata is charging towards Garuda.Wife of Indra can be seen in pillion seat.Just look at the Detailing of Garuda & Airavat sculptures.
Kirata-Arjuniyam episode in Vana Parva - of #Mahabharata serves as a proof of the persistence & focus of Arjuna & the playfulness,generosity of Bhagawan Shiva.Also Shiva wished to test Arjuna,so appears as Kirata/hunter along with Devi as a huntress.

Sculptures depicts Arjuna doing tapas,Killing of boar,battle between Kirata(Shiva) &Arjun after which Arjuna obtained Pashupatastra.
#story#Thread -In Vana Parva,Arjun sets out to attain the Pashupatastra from Shiva.He was doing tapas,was distracted as he saw a wild boar(asura) rushing towards him to slay him.Arjun took his Gandiva & pointed it at the boar.A hunter(kirata)&his wife were present at that spot.
Vishnu dhoots save Ajamila from being taken away by Yama dhoothas -A #story from Srimad Bhagavatham.
Ajamila was well learned virtuous&pure hearted brahmin man.Due to bad company& situations,he lead a low life,did gambling &many wrong things.He married a women of different caste
He named his youngest son as Narayana.He was very close to his youngest son.At the time of Ajamila’s death,when Yama dhootas came to take him,he loudly called the name Narayana in fear because he was attached to his youngest son.Thus he remembered Bhagwan Narayan
Though Ajamila has not uttered Narayana thinking about Bhagwan, Vishnu dhoots came to help Ajamila from being taken by Yama dhoothas. Following the discussion between Yama dhoothas & Vishnu dhoothas ,he got mukti. As he has uttered nama Narayana - unintionally all his paap gone.
Ancient but beautiful temple dedicated to Hanuman. This temple is a legendary one. According to the Sthala Puranam of Sanjeevi Rayar temple,it is associated with an episode from Ramayana.
Legend story -Hanuman was flying from Himalayas to Lanka bearing Sanjeevi hill to revive Lakshmana during battle between Rama& Ravana, a piece of the Sanjeevi Parvat fell at this place.Many believe this legendary story & even today that no one here dies of any kind of poisoning.
From historical background of the temple it is known that temple was originally built by a great scholar &administrator Kotikanyadanam Lakshmikumara Tatacharya. Temple itself&village were named following name of great scholar Tatacharya, who was then popularly known as Ayyangar.

Depicts Bhima held in trunk of Supratika.As he tried to injure Supratika while going underneath it but in vain.Also Bhima is seen attacking Bhagadatta with mace.
Bhagadatta was Raja of Pragjyotisha Kingdom.He was extremely skilled in using elephants in warfare.Arjuna defeated Bhagadatta during time of Raja-suya yagya performed by Yudhishthira.He considered Pandavas as his enemies from that defeat.
