Master Sun's Five Fundamentals: 3) Earth

Studying Earth, we turn first to the Yin Yang.

1) The Way
2) Heaven

5) Discipline

2) There are many tales regarding the discovery of the Yin Yang. As a visual symbol, such as the one above, history offers us the 1st use by Rome in an image of its many insignia from around 400 A.D. Note it appears twice in the second row.

3) We won't linger to explore Roman symbols. It is, however, a tremendous unanswered question about the origin of our symbol. What, if any, is the tie between the Roman and the Chinese usage? We don't know. But as I said, there are many tales about is origin in ancient China.

4) Another ancient Chinese text, one with roots 1,000s of years back to prehistory, is called the I Ching, or the Book of Changes. It is highly abstract, mathematical book build around the idea of a binary structure to the universe. Weak, soft and wet vs hard, strong, and dry.

5) In the I Ching, an entire picture of the universe is constructed from just two simple representations, a strong line vs a broken line, like so:

As I said, very abstract. But the Chinese are very concrete thinkers, practical.

6) Think of the broken line as dark, moist, shadowy; the strong line is light, dry, hardened. One of the most powerful sources of this binary distinction is their discovery of the differences between the South and the North faces of mountains.

7) You find the exact same phenomenon on trees, too. The north side of a tree will be more damp due to its shadowy face. More fungus marks north. The south side will have less fungus and its bark will be drier, harder. Now picture the same thing on a mountain or tall hill.

8) With Yin being north, and Yang being south, we can begin to draw a map of the land, of the Earth. Which side of a valley do you plant which types of crops? Also, thinking of a mountain range, we get back to the broken vs the strong lines of the I Ching.

9) As one mountain grows out of another, a strong, impenetrable line stands. But, inevitably, there will be a break, an opening the in the march of mountains, a passage through which you may go. The passage is Yin. The Yang line may only be climbed over, not through.

10) In English we have a lovely turn of phrase, "the lay of the land." All warfare ends up upon the land. Yes, we now have navies, air forces, and the new domain of space forces. Yet we humans live on the land, and it is us and the land we live on that wars are fought for.

11) What is the Earth for local patriots in 2021 America? The easiest place to commence is with our 2 political parties. Sadly, the vast majority of my readers are Republican. We fight the Democrats. But in our own party, there are RINOs and MAGA members.

12) The term RINO, Republican In Name Only, is pejorative. It applies, really, to the party leadership that's been in place forever, and through its corruption, always betrays its voters and sides with Democrats against the rank-and-file members of the party.

13) Among we rank and file, we ought, I suspect, term the old school Republicans something like Conservative Republicans, or even Traditional, Conservative Republicans (TCR). Then there are us new rebels, we're 100% MAGA. We love Trump.

14) If there's a single line of demarcation separating us MAGA from the TCR, it would have to be decorum. TCR always, well at least often cringes at Trump. We MAGA thrill to him. That's true across the land. What about locally?

15) It's tempting to break a local community down by power, wealth, and connections - the Insiders - versus disconnection, isolation, and if not poverty then surely NOT wealth and of course by lack of connections - the Outsiders. I am absolutely an outsider, personally.

16) My status as an isolated, and NOT connected outsider is rapidly changing. I have a friend, our Chief Deputy Sheriff with whom I've commenced a friendship, and I am in communication with 2 of our 6 County Supervisors. As a committee, they run the show, here.

16) I want you to know that, so far, everyone takes phone calls and engages in conversation easily, happily. You must remember, though, that I am skilled in the avoidance of conflict. I am also skilled in self-introduction and the creation of positive conversation with anyone.

17) Let's get back to Republicans (Reds) vs Democrats (Blues). I live in what appears to be an almost pure blue county. The reason for this is the University of Virginia. It has a trust fund of over $8 BILLION. It is the great mountain of power in this county. Money is power.

18) Yet beneath the surface of pure blue Democrat control, there is a vast reach of quietly Red, at least Republican leaning conservatives amidst our population. I couldn't begin to guess, yet, what the actual numbers are. I can tell you that the Red vote is suppressed.

19) I have two anecdotes to share. One is that every time I've ever attempted to contact the local Republican Party Office, I get no answer, and no return call after leaving a message. Imagine that. The second is more dramatic.

20) In the 3 elections I've voted (in one case, 2016, attempted but failed to vote), there have always been both Democrat and Liberal Issues booths outside as you walk up. There have been NO Republican or Conservative Issues booths. Not one. How's that for a head breaker?

21) You will not be able to argue with me when I tell you that in my county, Republicans are Yin, Democrats are Yang, more than that, MASSIVELY Yang. That is why I use the word "suppressed" when it comes to the local Red vote. No victory vision is present. We have no Command.

22) As we've seen, Heaven can't be understood without The Way to lead us there. So also with Earth, it can't be understood without Heaven. In our county, UVA holds the keys to our local Heaven. It's blessings and decrees dictate conditions on the ground. It grants us light.

23) So also, each of the Five Fundamentals is informed by those that follow. With Heaven at UVA, the local Democrat structure is solid and mighty. The Red structure is feckless, unled, with no Command and no possibility, so far, of Discipline.

24) So far? Absolutely. Our Local Patriot's Reading List offers us The Way forward. There can be no question, we must become an insurgency. Therefore, the on-the-ground text required is #4, From Dictatorship To Democracy.

25) At least in my function as, for the moment, temporary County Soul (my family faces a stay-or-go decision as do so many others in Blue Counties), I must read and study, master Sharp's guidance. At the same time an oblique project is required.

26) How many churches are there here in Albemarle County, how many pastors, preachers, priests, rabbis, or imams are there? Do we have other religious creeds? of course we must. Book #5 The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates informs just such an oblique project.

27) The lay of the land in churches may be analyzed exactly as for individual persons. Churches are either wealthier, more connected and powerful within the community, or less so. Which pastors are open to a Red message, a Red mission? Can 10 be found? 5, 4, 3, 2, or even just 1?

28) A research project is indicated on the vote itself. How many registered voters do we have? What is their identification? And what are our vote counts, our percentage of participation? Where might our insurgency find passageways through the Blue Mountains, here?

29) Is it destiny that our locale also goes by the name the Blue Ridge Area? All battles end up being over the land, and in local politics they are all fought upon the land, 100%. Where may our not-yet-born insurgency seek as its birthplace and initial targets for effort?

30) If you choose to become your own County Soul, you will certainly come to know your Earth, there, in completely new ways. I assure you, studying Master Sun's guidance will take on meaning for you through that opening, as through no other.
