We are 13 months into a global pandemic; some of us have been vaccinated while others are waiting. We are 13 months into online learning/pandemic learning/not-inside-classrooms learning for most of us. #CJDSChat
I am thinking a lot about the events of Sunday, where protesters/congregants of a particular church that hasn't been following prov. Covid guidelines trespassed on a reserve localish to me (Enoch), attempting to harm & harming folks there.
I am once again reminded how these actions--among others that occur daily--demonstrate that Indigenous peoples and communities do not matter to a significant portion of the settler populace. #CJDSChat
What’s more, the same attitudes are present online in the vitriolic comments that decree why Indigenous peoples should not have vaccine priority, despite decreased access to care, medical racism impacting care, and medical conditions tied to colonialism. #CJDSChat
With tonight’s #CJDSChat focusing on complaint, I think it is integral to briefly discuss how settler colonialism, which is tied to the institutions of the Canadian nation-state, continually impacts Indigenous peoples.
Events such as what occurred on Sunday, as well as systemic racism and colonialism, plus individual acts of anti-Indigenous racism demonstrate the ongoing institutional violence that is Canada. #CJDSChat
As I have said previously, Indigenous peoples have asked settlers (incl. myself) to listen rather than just hear their complaints. More of us need to focus on our listening. #CJDSChat
However, we will be taking a looser definition of the word complaint, in that we will be airing our grievances about academia particularly in reference to a full year of a mix of online learning and crisis learning. #CJDSChat
Previously I had said that this chat would be the second one in April on complaint; in actuality, the previous one was in August 2020. April, August, same thing? What is linear time anyway? #CJDSChat
A housekeeping note: The last #CJDSChat moderated by me until August will be on Tuesday May 11th. We will be chatting about the upcoming #Congressh, which is joint hosted between @UAlberta and @Ideas_idees, as well as academic conferences in general. #UAlberta
However, if you would like to guest moderate the #CJDSChat in June or July, please send me a message: I would love to have another guest moderator or two over the summer.
To participate in the chat tonight, please answer the questions I pose while interacting with the other folks who are in attendance by using the chat hashtag (#CJDSChat) in your reply.
When you answer a Q (a question), please add the question number to your reply to help folks know what you’re responding to. Being me, I will use 2 punny examples to model what I mean. #CJDSChat
Q1: What is an economist’s favourite flower? #CJDSChat
--- [pretend these are 2 different tweets] ---
A1: Peonies because a peony saved is a peony earned. #CJDSChat
Q2: What genre of music do botanists love? #CJDSChat
--- [pretend these are 2 different tweets] ---
A2: Heavy petal. #CJDSChat
Remember you’re under no obligation to answer any question and your comfort is of utmost importance. #CJDSChat
If you happen to see this thread after 9pm EST, thanks for poppy-n.
Please feel free to respond and I will RT and respond when I am able. I am always happy to continue the conversation beyond the conception of linear time. #CJDSChat
A quick note, because I am trying to be hip and relevant, I am replacing “pandemic” with another pan- word in each tweet, followed by pandemic in brackets. #CJDSChat
For example,
- Is this your first pantoffel (pandemic)?
- Will the panfried (pandemic) impact the economy?
- Has the panjandrum (pandemic) shifted your perspective on snack procurement? #CJDSChat
There are nine questions tonight, inclusive of the introduction question. Don’t be so impatiens. We’re starting now. #CJDSChat
Q1: Please introduce yourself as you feel comfortable, e.g., name, pronouns, program, institution, your favourite flower (and why). #CJDSChat
Q2: How has academia (as a structure and/or organization) disappointed you since the onset of the panini (pandemic)? #CJDSChat
Q3: How have academic events (e.g., conferences, workshops) disappointed you during the panorama (pandemic)? #CJDSChat

Q9: Who or what else in academia has disappointed you during the pangolin (pandemic)? #CJDSChat
Well folks, I am by no means ending our chat, but thistle be all for me tonight because I need to eat foods. Please keep the convos going and I will respond once I have had some form of nourishment. #CJDSChat
