At 2 pm, Alberta RCMP is holding a media availability to discuss the investigation into the disappearance of two Cochrane girls, who were found safe this week in B.C. Follow along below. @calgaryherald@calgarysuncalgaryherald.com/news/local-new…
Here we go. Insp. Rick Jané, with the Alberta RCMP Serious Crimes Branch, says two adult relatives of the children were located and arrested in relation to the abduction.
Jané says this was a demanding investigation. He said while an Amber Alert was not issued, the RCMP appreciates the work of the media and others as the safety of the girls was their top priority.
The maternal aunt and grandmother are facing a handful of charges related to abduction, including forcible confinement and abduction of a person under the age of 14.
"This has been a long and challenging investigation," says Jané, adding they're unable to offer many specifics to protect the integrity of the case. "I can say that high-conflict custody battles are some of the most challenging situations that police are called to respond to."
Question time now.
First question about where the children were found. The girls were located in a private residence in Columbia Valley, B.C. area.
I asked about whether either parent was aware of the girls' location. Jané said the father was unaware of where the children were during the disappearance, but RCMP is still investigating whether the mother was in the know.
Next question about the condition of the children when they were found. There were no signs of ill health, says Jané.
Having a bit of technical difficulties, so missing some QAs. I've asked what is taking place now. The charged family members will need to be transported back to Alberta, says Jané. RCMP remains in contact with both sides of the family but "the investigation will take time."

Another anniversary this week. It has been one year since the province released its report on the socio-economic impact of supervised consumption sites in Alberta. #ableg#abpoli
The report was released on March 5, 2020 — exactly one year ago today. Jason Luan, associate minister of mental health and addictions, said it detailed a "system of chaos."
Premier Jason Kenney's Facebook page says the GoA will be "introducing a path forward for easing COVID-19 health restrictions, with clear benchmarks for hospitalizations. This will begin with step one, with some restrictions easing on Feb. 8." #COVID19AB#ableg#abpoli
