Age 15-19 has emerged as currently the age group with the highest rate of #COVID19 in Germany 🇩🇪.

Also notice kids 5-9 and 10-14 now have the highest infection rates than ever before in the pandemic.

So, yeah, kids do get COVID, and kids to transmit. Full stop.
2) Is Germany the first to see this? No. A pediatric surge was also seen in Sweden as #B117 was rising there too. #B117 is now found to be more contagious in kids than old strain.
3) Cases are low in the elderly thankfully because of vaccinations. But worrisome still is that ICUs in Germany are still filling up and nearing former record rates.
4) This also matches the data and warnings coming from Italy health officials last month who were also concerned about a sudden pediatric surge.

6) A figure on schools that is self explanatory what happened when schools opened and closed.
7) While true most kids don’t die or hospitalized— I have two things to point out: @LongCovidKids is real, and kids bring cases back to families. And we see this in millions of household data.
8) “Children are more likely to bring the virus into the household” is not just my editorializing — it’s a firm conclusion from UK’s leading SAGE expert group report!
9) Which occupational group had among one of the highest #COVID19 rates in England? Teachers.
10) But but but.... what about occupational groups with among the highest mortality during pandemic? Teaching assistants are in the list in the US.
11) So for some optimism— we can keep kids safe. By wearing masks in classrooms, moving school lunches outside, and installing CDC-recommended HEPA filters and UV disinfection devices. See this detailed thread 🧵 of CDC school air recommendations ⬇️
12) Neighboring Germany, AT also seeing age 15-24 and 5-14 as the highest age incidence groups for #COVID19.

BREAKING—U.S. State Department has added at least 116 countries this week to its “Level Four: Do Not Travel” advisory list, putting the UK, Canada, France, Israel, Mexico, Germany and others on the list, citing a “very high level of #COVID19.” 🧵

2) On Monday, the State Department said it would boost the number of countries receiving its highest advisory rating to about 80% of countries worldwide.
Before Tuesday, the State Department listed 34 out of about 200 countries as "Do Not Travel."
3) Other countries in the "Do Not Travel" list include Finland, Egypt, Belgium, Turkey, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. Some countries like China and Japan remain at Level 3: Reconsider Travel."

Sweden 🇸🇪 holds the dubious title of having 15 of the top 21 #COVID19 hotspots in Europe.

France 🇫🇷 Netherlands 🇳🇱 and Croatia 🇭🇷 holds several of the other top spots.

I cry for the India 🇮🇳. Brutal epidemic ravaging the country, and hospitals are completely overwhelmed. A staggering 300,000 cases—and possibly 10x underdiagnosis means maybe ~3 million actual cases a day. #COVID19

Damn—An unvaccinated health care worker set off a #COVID19 outbreak at a nursing home where most residents were vaccinated—dozens of infections, including 22 cases among residents/staff who were already fully vaccinated. 1 death in a nursing resident. 🧵

2) “The study estimated that the vaccine, identified as Pfizer-BioNTech, showed effectiveness of 66 percent for residents and 75.9 percent for employees, and were 86 percent to 87 percent effective at protecting against symptomatic disease."
3) Most of those who were infected with the coronavirus despite being vaccinated did not develop symptoms or require hospitalization, but one vaccinated individual, who was a resident of the nursing home, died, according to the study released by the CDC.
