We are joining the Board of Education meeting for a very small portion of the regular meeting today. The Board is currently considering the nomination of a new Vice President #BoardWatch

There is a back and forth as to whether to vote on a new VP now or wait to allow more time for the public to weigh in. A motion to postpone the vote fails. @FaauugaMoliga is the VP nominee. #BoardWatch

Vote is 6-1 for Moliga as new VP—@AliMCollins is no vote. #BoardWatch

Next up is the Superintendents report. @SFUSD_Supe references George Floyd and encourages continued dialogue about white supremacy, white privilege, and police violence. #BoardWatch

Supes report: emphasizes the importance of vaccination - there is info coming soon on the website and by email and other communications. #BoardWatch

Supe report: LGBTQ pride month is coming up. This year celebrations will be virtual and in small groups (GSAs, etc). Remember that the first pride events were protests. #BoardWatch

Supe report: This week the annual school climate survey launched this week. There will be surveys for students, staff, and families. Please complete by May 4! #BoardWatch

Supe report: regarding contract amendment for superintendent. Notes that supe and board are "governance team"- identified areas to support good governance practice moving forward. #BoardWatch

Supe report: On contract modification-see it as recommitting to shared agreements. Not intended as a reprimand. "This discourse is extremely problematic," says Superintendent Matthews. #BoardWatch

Student delegate report: start by noting-a guilty verdict but our work is not over. Info on timeline for SAC elections . Youth summit this year will be this Friday, April 23, 9-1. #BoardWatch

Student delegates: getting student feedback on ethnic studies resolution implementation. Delegate Correa Almanza references Chauvin verdict and holds a moment of silence for victims of police brutality. #BoardWatch

Next up, RAVE awards Distinguished service award going to Pirette McKamey, Principal at Mission HS. She is a published author (fiction as well as nonfiction!) A leader in antiracist teaching.#BoardWatch

McKamey: it has been my pleasure to serve for over 30 years, feel gratitude, and appreciate the honor of having our work recognized. #BoardWatch

RAVE distinguished service award also going to Amy Whitcomb, Teacher at Sunnyside ES. Principal notes how she develops strong relationships with students, staff and families. Student-centered. #BoardWatch

Whitcomb thanks her college friends who told her she would be a good teacher, mentors, colleagues, IT department, 600 students over the years who have taught me to be a better human being and teacher. #BoardWatch

Whitcomb's words of advice: "thank your teacher." It means a great deal to hear about the difference they have made. Also thanks UESF and everyone who has made it possible for schools to open. #BoardWatch
