FDTD – Chapters 6 & 7: What and How

It wasn't a true read but not merely an advanced skim. I was able to take in both chapters 6 & 7 and now have the answer as to why they're two chapters, not one. Calculation played an important, if erroneous part.
2) As spelling is to reading and writing, counting is to calculation and mathematical analysis. I have suffered terrible capabilities in both spelling and counting for my entire life. Just yesterday, I demonstrated the same failure all over again.
3) I've made the precise same mistake before many times. Consider the page count in a chapter of a book. If, like me, you take the first page of the next chapter and subtract from it the first page of the previous chapter, you get an erroneous page count for the chapter, by one.
4) For example a chapter beginning on page 1, ending on page 10, with next chapter beginning on page 11, ONLY has NINE pages, not TEN. The counting answer? You subtract first page from last page of the chapter. 10 – 1 = 9. That is the correct calculation. I always get this wrong.
5) By subtracting back from the first page of the next chapter, 11 – 1 = 10, I erroneously include that first page into the count. I have now completed my correction of my error, and you can see it here.
6) Whoops! I made another error. This was NOT an error of calculation, but rather an error of notation. I did the right math but wrote it down erroneously, again, and have now corrected my correction...
7) We'll get to the significance of the count shortly. Before we do, we must ponder the significance of the elementary (or kindergarten) rule to:

Show Your Work
8) There is no such thing as failure-free success. All success entails many mini-failures - and their associated learning - at every step upon the path to victory. Showing your work empowers you to embrace your failures as the source of learning you require.
9) By attempting, and failing (yet again!), to get my page count right, I have now learned this rule:

Last Page - First Page = Accurate Page Count

I will never make the same mistake again now that I have my correct rule.
10) After all that calculation stuff, what's the significance? Chapters 6 & 7 are the hidden message in Sharp's work. They are the real point of his work. Chapters 1 - 5 lead up to them. Chapters 8 - 10 follow thereafter. I can prove this and will.
11) There is no other consecutive pair of chapters with an equal page count. Add to that the fact that these two chapters tackle the same issue - Strategic Planning & Planning Strategy - and you can easily see that this is the single most important topic Sharp gives us.
12) There is an above the surface and beneath the surface aspect here. Above the surface is the mandate that we MUST do strategic planning. Beneath the surface is the fact that we don't, and the question, why not? What are the hurdles and how do we overcome them?
13) Surprisingly, what is the answer to how. In Chapter 6, Sharp gives us the answer to the question, what is strategic planning. He tackles the need but teaches the what. It is:

1) Grand Strategy
2) Strategy
3) Tactics
4) Methods
14) In order to get to the how of execution against the plan, you MUST master both the definitions and the logic of those four components. We won't quote him or delve these four components today. We must linger on their very existence as answers in general.
15) To get there, let's pretend you're the king of your county. You wish to make your county a better place. You'll need your citizens to follow and adhere to your plan. You'll have to share your grand strategy, your basic strategies, your tactics and methods with them.
16) As king, you can enforce compliance but that can never be the path to freedom and you know it. Rather, you must recruit compliance and voluntary, belief- and values-based agreement and participation.
17) In our real world, not only are you NOT king, you have no power to enforce anything. Yet, the four great objectives of our movement remain. Here they are again:

1) Grand Strategy
2) Basic Strategies
3) Tactics
4) Methods
18) Let's tackle the differences between chapters 6 & 7 again. Where 6 tells you what you must do, 7 focuses on how you do it. What is strategic planning? How do we go about executing a strategic plan?
19) We've looked at the heart of chapter 6. These two quotes from chapter 7 help us make the difference clear.
Interlude: I'm afraid my work day has caught up with me before we can complete today's analysis. No worries! After my coming coaching session, I'll return and complete our analysis this afternoon. I hope you'll find it helpful to your own studies.
20) On page 73 we learn 3 targets for Strategic Planning:

1) Strengthen the suffering people
2) Weaken and destroy the dictatorship
3) Build a durable democracy (which I always call a republic)

Each of these three targets deserves its own analysis.
21) There is an intersection where strategy and tactics converge. At the end of chapter 7 we learn the ultimate objective for both our planning and our execution. Here's the image from page 87 where these two chapters come together.
22) In the end, it comes down to agreement or disagreement in action. Noncooperation is the opposite of compliant agreement. We won't delve my new model today, but do consider how it connects mightily right here...
23) Noncooperation - the right to disagree - is Sharp's single most important mandate. His entire approach pivots around it. No dictatorship or tyrant can survive without compliant surrender, which is actually a form of complete agreement.
24) After I typed in the comment above, it struck me, you really need to have the "Monkey Master" fable, from chapter 3, pages 27 & 28. We'll consider Sharp's true conclusion from this fable next. Here is the fable itself...
25) "Dictators require the assistance of the people they rule, without which they cannot secure and maintain the sources of political power."

Jefferson gave us the same point when he placed the phrase "the consent of the governed" into our Declaration.
26) Until reading Sharp, I always considered that to be our goal as a people. What Sharp explains is that as opposed to prescriptive this phrase is descriptive. It is always the case, one way or another. Tyrants live by the consent of the governed, just as we do.
27) When Lincoln names our government as being OF the people, BY the people, and FOR the people, he is riffing on this theme. Our government, he teaches us, is in perfect accord with the dependency of the governors upon the governed for their very existence.
28) The point of chapters 6 & 7 is to empower us to heal our nation for which we MUST know WHAT a strategic plan is, and HOW to both create and implement such a plan. He teaches us HOW to analyze our conditions, and HOW to PLAN our actions over time.
29) My county enjoys the tyrannical power of taxation without representation. Yes, of course there are representatives. No, they do not represent us the people of this county. What we require is a strategic analysis and plan for execution, right here, in my county.
30) It is high time that we monkeys remove our support from our master. When I return to chapters 6 & 7 in my full re-read, I will commence my attempt at seeding just such an analysis and plan, locally.

It is now time to return to the beginning and read the entire book through.
Thread ends at #30.

FDTD – The Preface Can Be The Most Personal Part

Prefaces and Forewords are almost always written after the book has been completed. How do you know what you're going to say before you've said it? These two quotes are from Sharp's Preface. ImageImage
2) Points:

* The prevention of tyranny might be possible
* Successful struggles against dictatorships could be waged
* And waged without mutual slaughter
* Dictatorships could be destroyed
* New dictatorships could be prevented from rising out of the ashes of the old
3) Points:

* The fall of one regime does not bring a utopia
* Hard work and long efforts follow
* The goal is more just social, economic, and political relationships
* The goal is the eradication of other forms of injustices and oppression

FDTD – From Skimming The Beginning To Skimming The End

Having done a full skim, to having read the entire book on Kindle, my hard copy study still follows a type of skimming path. These are the two final pages, screenshot from my laptop Kindle. ImageImage
2) There can be no question, Kindle's capabilities for search, highlighting, and searchable notations have transformed my reading and study practice. Yet, the hard copy process is only strengthened. Look... ImageImage
3) I don't know why, but on Kindle I didn't even notice FTDT's last chapter title: Groundwork for Durable Democracy. Reading this chapter the 2nd time this morning in hard copy, it jumped out at me. Fascinating.

From Democracy To Freedom – The Hard Copy Arrives!

While I've studied both e-versions and hard copies of the same book before, never quite like this morning. It's a practice I hope to inspire in you and all fellow local patriot students. ImageImageImageImage
2) We'll walk through the 4 images above in just a bit. First, I want to give you an overall reaction to the hard copy and its instant impact upon me. I haven't studied Sharp's life yet, but I soon enough will. This hard copy opens that door for me, powerfully.
3) Although the information is there in the e-versions, it somehow missed me that FDTD comes after 40+ years of study and research, analysis and guidance on the phenomenon of political non-violence. A single principle can be identified within his entire corpus of work.

Action Alone Is Not The Answer

There are many reasons, but one more than any other, followed by a close second. The most important reason is how little action there actually is.
2) Action has 5 stages:

1) Consideration
2) Decision
3) Commencement
4) Execution
5) Completion

You might be surprised to learn that actually getting started is the hardest part. Pushing execution through to completion follows next. Let's redo the list that way...
3) Here's our 5-part Action Stages list, ordered from most difficult to easiest:

1) Commencement
2) Completion
3) Execution
4) Decision
5) Consideration

This too is complex, however, and deceptive as well. Wheels within wheels, this is not simple stuff.

Master Sun's Five Fundamentals In Review

Here they are again. Please try to take them in and make them your own.

1) The Way
2) Heaven
3) Earth
4) Command
5) Discipline
2) I claim to be a very disciplined follower. The MAGA Movement has, to date, just one ultimate leader, President Donald Trump. Following his stolen victory in 2020, I realized that I must become a follower on down the chain from his office to that of my local county sheriff.
3) Here it is 2021, and so far in my life I've never engaged over a governor's run. Or over State Legislature elections. Or over my own county's supervisorial elections. I've never studied the candidates. I've never gotten involved.

Master Sun's Five Fundamentals: 5) Discipline

“Discipline is Organization, Chain of command, Control of expenditure.”
2) "Every commander is aware of these Five Fundamentals. He who grasps them wins; he who fails to grasp them loses."

The Way. Heaven. Earth. Command. Discipline. These are the Five Fundamentals.

3,083 Counties in America. Who masters these Five Fundamentals for each?
3) Discipline. This is my great accusation against our side. We allow the other side to be more disciplined than we are. They are more organized. They know their way, their heaven, their attack upon the earth, who their commander is, and their discipline better than we do.
