The bench will pronounce judgment on a plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to an accused in the 2015 Azamgargh lawyer murder case under UP Gangster Act #SupremeCourt
The four-judge bench assembles. CJI Designate Justice NV Ramana takes a seat next to CJI SA Bobde
This is the last proceeding CJI SA Bobde will preside over as the CJI #SupremeCourt
CJI SA Bobde: We have interfered with the order granting bail. We have recalled the effect of grant of bail to a person charged with several offences. We have said that important to recoignise potential threat to life of witness if such an accused is set free.
CJI: We have set aside the Allahabad High Court order #SupremeCourt
Attorney General KK Venugopal: I have always said retiring of a CJI is a sad occasion. Tenure of a CJI must be three years. In March 2020 the world was suffering from COVID19. #supremecourt also had to take a call and bar thought court will close down.
AG: But then CJI Bobde rose to the occasion and started virtual hearing and almost 50,000 cases have been disposed off. its a great achievement,
AG: Many young lawyers have suffered but a balance needs to be struck. Lawyers approached for financial aid and CJI then stepped in and realized then client lawyers could not meet. CJI by judicial order said limitation shall not apply from March 15, 2021
AG: We should all unanimously applaud CJI for the work he has done
SG Mehta: CJI SA Bobde will not only be known as a erudite and brilliant judge but also a loving and caring human, we will miss you. We wish you a healthy and successful life ahead
Senior Adv Vikas Singh: I have seen the fitness of your lordships fitness in the tennis court. There needs to be a constitutional amendment so that the tenure of the judges can be increased.
Vikas Singh: I am echoing sentiments of AG and SG that by innovating virtual mode have kept wheels of justice moving
Singh: You had taken up such a contentious matter on the last day too. This shows the involvement of the judges and to ensure oxygen supply can be maintained. Till the last day you were concerned about what is happening.
Adv Shivaji Jadhav: We acknowledge the smoothness with which the CJI created a transmission from physical to virtual courts. CJI Bobde will be remembered for his handling of the criminal justice system.
Jadhav: COVID19 waves will remain and please consider opening physical courts after summer vacation
CJI SA Bobde: I must say that last day has evoked mixed feelings which is difficult to describe. I have been a part of the ceremonial bench before but did not feel such mixed feelings which could enable me to say things clearly.
CJI: I leave this court with happiness, goodwill with very fond memories of wonderful arguments, excellent presentation, good behavior, commitment to the cause of justice from not only Bar but all connected with it, I demit office after 22 years as a judge
CJI it has been my richest experience in the Supreme Court. Camaraderie with my brother judges has been wonderful. Transition to the virtual mode would not have been possible without the registry. There are many unsatisfactory things about VC hearings which can be ironed out later
CJI: Advantages was that hearings were homely as I could see hills behind lawyers, sculptures and paintings behind lawyers including guns and pistols. The painting behind SG Mehta has been removed now.
CJI: I leave with the satisfaction that I did my best. I hand over the baton to Justice Ramna who will I am sure will very ably lead the court.
