On a call now with Energy Minister Sonya Savage. The province is halting the exploration for coal for all Category 2 lands, as the committee consults on new coal policy. #ableg
The ban on this will be from now until - at a minimum - after all consultations are complete, Savage says. They want to public engagement process to be engaged "in good faith," she says. More than 25,000 Albertans filled out that coal survey in just three weeks. #ableg
Albertans did not shy away from this survey, Savage says. She says nobody will be restricted from sharing their thoughts during the coal engagement, including on water and environment #ableg
Committee chair Ron Wallace asks all Albertans to please continue to work with the committee and give their thoughts on the coal policy. Says there is "an overwhelming interest" on this issues, adds he appreciates the passion. #ableg
Wallace says the coal committee intends to expand its consultations, including with Indigenous communities. #ableg
As for the coal survey, initial results indicate the majority of respondents feel the management of the
province’s coal resources affect them, and picked environmental impacts and if/where coal development takes place as the most important issues #ableg
Calling for a halt to exploration on Category 2 lands will ensure the consultations are effective and credible, Wallace says #ableg
I asked how they make these consultations more credible. Wallace says there has been "sensational soundbites" about the terms of reference for the coal committee, but "Albertans deserve better." They will hear ALL concerns, he says #ableg
Savage adds that there is absolutely no pre-ordained outcome here with the coal consultations, and the committee is "fiercely independent" #ableg
Savage says this was an *initial* survey. It was not the consultation - it was to figure out what the consultations should look like. The reason they've paused Cat 2 exploration is b/c of some feedback from that preliminary survey. "Engagement is just beginning" #ableg
Will the committee report on ALL concerns brought forward by Albertans? Committee chair Ron Wallace says any and all concerns voiced by Albertans with regard to impacts of coal "will be heard respectfully, considered carefully and reported to the minister" #ableg
Savage says she has already spoken with some First Nations about coal. On the broader consultations, "You can't tell an Albertan what they can and can't talk about," she says, but adds this is about coal, not other land/water plans, tho that might flow from the consults #ableg
Savage says there has been a month of political stunts by the NDP on this to distract from their own record on coal, when a bunch of coal approvals were granted when they were in government. "Let's move forward," she says. #ableg
"Please participate in this process," Savage says in closing #ableg

I’ll be getting up early for this summit... which starts at 6am MT. The world leaders will talk in alphabetical order, based on their country. Yes, I wanna see what Australia has to say. No, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. theglobeandmail.com/business/artic…#cdnpoli
Well now this isn’t the leaders talking in alphabetical order at the climate summit at all! So far we’ve had USA, China, India, now UK. It’s a true international journey (that I cannot physically go 😷☹️). I suppose I’ve been all these places already BUT STILL. #cdnpoli
Tell you what tho this is quite the background behind Boris Johnson. Very arty.
SanLing is closing up shop April 30, weeks after the AER suspended thousands of its operating licences. Orphan Well Association has applied to court to have a receiver assume control of SanLing inventory. B/g on the original charges: theglobeandmail.com/business/artic…#ableg#cdnecon#oott
Blair Reilly, AER enforcement director: “Our repeated attempts to bring SanLing into compliance have failed." Says it's "unfortunate" SanLing is ceasing operations, adds AER has "systems in place" for when companies can't meet responsibilities to clean up messes. #ableg#cdnecon
SanLing has apparently committed to an orderly transition of its assets to a receiver, which will in turn figure out where the assets go. Any remaining assets will land with the OWA. So... more for their books then. #ableg#cdnpoli#cdnecon
Aside from ⬇️ emissions, Nat Resources Minister O’Regan told CERAWeek CCUS is key for jobs for workers moving from oil & gas. “We think that lowering emissions by having them work on CCUS projects is going to be really important.” #ableg#cdnpoli#cdnecontheglobeandmail.com/business/artic…
The IEA also says carbon capture will be key to energy transition/lower emissions, and costs have fallen significantly. Bonus! Here’s a pic I took of Lindsey Graham visiting the Boundary Dam CCS plant in SK in 2015 as part of a bipartisan US group. #ableg#cdnpoli#skpoli
Australia a police state?!? Scott Moe tried a line like this today as well, to which I say HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA nah. Life is basically back to normal and everyone’s at restaurants and bars and hanging out with friends and family. #ableg#skpoli
In fact I just got off the phone with my 91-yr-old grandmother (in remission from breast cancer) and she had to go because he ride was there TO GO TO THE DAMN GROCERY STORE. Sure. Yeah. Absolutely terrible job they’ve done, so that my grandma can go out shopping 🙄 #ableg#skpoli
The thing my grandma is most upset about with covid is she feels bad she might have not socially distanced properly every time she asked people to pat their dogs. She’s 91, “if I’d known I was going to live this long when my last dog died, I would’ve got another one.” #ableg
There seems to be some discussion on the #ableg feed today around Aussie-style covid lockdowns. I don't have an opinion, but here are Facebook pics from friends in three states back home (nsw, qld, vic), all taken in the last month. It's *wild* how normal this is on my feed.
Most are also planning family Christmas gatherings, a friend is sad b/c her daughters are off to an island for a week for a Brownie camp. Also this happened in my home city mid-November. Fun fact! I used to work at this stadium. theguardian.com/sport/2020/nov…
