Between January to March, China imported 6.7 million tonnes of corn, +438% (to the same period last year), according to customs data. Imports of wheat and barley both surged by +130%, while 21.1 million tn. of soybean were brought into the country in the same period, +19% #Grains
China’s domestic feed industry uses roughly 75 million tonnes of soybean and 190 million tonnes of corn each year, the paper said. If the proportion of soymeal is reduced by 5 per cent, demand will be cut by 20 million tonnes, or about 25 per cent of overall soybean imports.
“What’s seizing us by the throat is not semiconductors, but farm livestock breeding,” China Futures, a state-owned financial and commodity futures brokerage service provider, said in a recent report
In March 2019, China also launched a soybean revitalisation plan to encourage farmers to replace crops such as corn with soybeans through state subsidies.... The shift to soybean farming has also reduced corn supply and pushed prices for the cereal grain to a five-year high.
