Yesterday was #LaborDay but none of us recalled some revolutionary thoughts of Bhagat Singh, a freedom fighter who has been appropriated by India's riot/hindutva wing today.

Bhagat believed that caste/casteism degraded the life/dignity of laborer.

The caste system, according to Bhagat Singh, was a system to extract free and cheap labour from the most under-privileged communities.

In ‘Satyagraha and Strike’ (1928), Bhagat ratiocinated that manual scavengers (untouchables) were the real working class: Image

Bhagat also believed that all those social reform movements lead by upper-caste were not intended to free the untouchables from the matrix of casteism. Upper-caste positively remember untouchables, only when there's a reaction to be done against communal representation. Image
4/13

The above tweet is so relevant today. It's also in sync with Ambedkar's thought on caste. Ambedkar believed tht Hindus remember their 'untouchable brothers' only when there's rioting against Muslims

To add to the woes, Bhagat believd tht why untouchables can't wear janeau?
In 'Religion & our freedom struggle' (1928), Bhagat called out Arya Samaj Founder Dayanand Saraswasti: "people also say that we must reform these ills [of untouchability]. Good! Swami abolished untouchability but he could not go beyond four varnas. Discrimination remains!"

5/13
Note that Bhagat's father was heavily influenced by Arya Samaj. Bhagat Singh refuting & debunking Swami, manifests the fierceness and critical consciousness against caste. As caste-ism represents social statism and deteriorates liberty, Bhagat was 'spot on' there.

Bhagat Singh too favored 'communal awards' for the untouchables, in a positive light. Later on, Ambedkar revolted against Gandhi for the same.

Bhagat, fearing the systemic invisibility-ness of untouchables with time, believed that: ImageImage

In context of the above tweet, Bhagat came to a critical realisation that legal framework alone would not solve the issue of untouchables. He asked: Image
9/13

In 'Problem of Untouchability' (June 1928), Bhagat Singh expressed his idealist thinking by asking the upper-caste to be apologetic. He also ratiocinated the no rituals or purification act was required to treat untouchables as equals. Image
10/13

Bhagat Singh understood caste and the practice of untouchability and its associated binary of purity-pollution as an integral part of Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma). He asks very crucial question: Image
11/13

Bhagat Singh ridiculed vedic scriptures and believed that caste justifies ‘usurped power, riches and superiority’.

He reiterates this point again in his 1930 pamphlet, "Why I am an Atheist", where he says: Image

I am sure that Bhagat Singh would be called 'Hinduphobic' for his thoughts on caste. If he were on twitter, he would be bullied for his tweets on caste. If he were in UP or MP, chances are that he would be lynched by now.

Ending this thread on a powerful thought by him:
“...meaning of our freedom is not only to liberate ourselves from the clutches of the English [men] but also complete independence, when all people live together harmoniously, liberated from mental slavery”. (Religion and our freedom struggle, 1928).

The End.

Amid a population of 135 crore, only 1.2L beneficiaries received incentives under 'Inter-Caste Marriage scheme' in 7 years. Although it's said that government's motivation to drive social exogamy is noble but is monetary incentivization enough to make the point?

Data here.
1/11
This measure i.e. promoting inter-caste marriages by providing financial assistance to couples marrying to Scheduled Castes (SCs) has been rolled out by governments at central & state levels to eradicate caste-based discrimination & increase intermingling of castes.

2/11
Inter-caste marriages are sanctioned by Special Marriage Act, 1954 and the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Financial assistance of Rs. 2.5 Lakhs is provided to inter-caste couples where one of the spouses belongs to SCs.

As if money alone will undo casteism!

The price for standing for yourself is the greatest treasure that one has to pay to bear the cost of toxic parenting, social statism and 'culture'.

Here's the case of a so-called friend, a girl, who was intimidated today morning by her 'Rajput' dad.

Thread.

Her crime is that she believes that she can make decisions for herself. She is financially independent, but her hindu 'rajput' family is against her personal choice i.e. getting married to a hindu guy of 'vaishya' caste, lower than 'kshatriya' clan.

2/10
I was not in touch with her since last few years. But when she suddenly remembered me today morning for assistance and empathy, I concluded that I turned out to be a candle in this dark time. I cancelled my lecs. and headed her home.

Bhakts, today, are celebrating the birth anniversary of Subhashchandra Bose. Bose was a freedom fighter who culminated INA to fight the British imperialism.

Whereas Bhakts' antecedents favored British imperialism over INA.

Thread (1/9) on Hindu Mahasabha's hypocrisy:
When Bose, during World War II (1939-1945), was trying to secure foreign support for liberation of India and trying to organise a military attack towards the northeast of the country, it was 'Veer' Savarkar who offered full military cooperation to the Britishers.

Some thoughts/excerpts on "I could not be #Hindu" by a former #RSS sevak/worker Bhanwar Meghwanshi, a #Dalit.

The book is really worth reading, just like #Ambedkar's "Annihilation of #Caste".

It is a unique 'testimony' to the RSS's #casteism.

Thread
1/23
Bhanwar has realised, in the end, that establishment of #RSS was also a partly reaction to the rise of #Dalit politics under the aegis of #Ambedkar whose first anti-caste mobilisations (including the Mahad satyagraha and temple entry movements).

2/23
In fact, Deendayal Upadhyaya defended '#casteism' even more explicitly, in Integral Humanism, a text that is still considered as its ideological charter by the RSS and BJP and other RW fringe groups.

Bhanwar experienced this as well.

It's not 'good governance day'. It's #ManusmritiDahanDivas'.

I bet, a lot many Indians are not aware about the same. During the Mahad Satyagraha, Dr Ambedkar bravely showed #Manusmriti its place.
Mahad Satyagraha was a fight to assert the Dalits’ right to access "public water", and to embrace humanity and dignity.

For Dr Ambedkar—a staunch advocate of women’s rights and emancipation—it was a political action to burn #Manusmriti publicly.

2/10
On December 25, 1927, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar burned #Manusmriti as a symbol of rejection of the religious basis of #untouchability.

After Uttar Pradesh, Haryana is embracing the 'bandwagon effect' of laws against love jihad. Other states will follow the chain too.

The law is not in sync with Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, in the first place, & it's tuned to Modi's political philosophy.

1/9
Secondly, the ramification of this abhorrent and misogynical law will disdain (and discourage) women to make inform and free choices for herself. No doubt the philosophy of this law is stemmed from Manusmriti's thoughts over women's rights.

2/9
1st of all, it's not government's business to tell us whom we shld marry or not. If there's coercion involved in such special marriages, then let the courts or law take up the matter. What gives govt. the right to state "Your Ram Naam Satya journey will begin" so blatantly?
